Women’s Horse IndustryHorses4Heroes
As you may or may not have heard, NARHA/PATH, the creator of the Horses for Heroes program, therapeutic riding for Wounded Warriors, has abandoned the use of the name Horses for Heroes and will be re-branding this therapeutic riding program. The other Horses4Heroes, our organization is able-bodied, affordable horseback riding for returning combat veterans and the entire family, which also needs healing and therapeutic interactions with horses! On Thursday night the red carpet was rolled out to identify and recognize people in the horse industry who are using their visibility to promote the welfare of the horse industry. Some of the WHINNY recipients who attended included Elizabeth Shatner (who not only received the award but picked up the one given to her husband Bill), country music superstar Lynn Anderson, Madeleine Pickens, Mike and Martha Borchetta, and Bonnie Garner. The event started off with live entertainment by some of country music’s most promising up and coming stars, including Keith Bryant, Dee Ann Dominy, Mark Wayne Glasmire, and Cassidy Lynn. In addition to the live entertainment, there was both a silent and live auction benefiting several equine charities. Lynn Anderson served as the auctioneer and helped sell some wonderful items such as a signed guitar from the movie Country Strong by Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw and several paintings by Elizabeth Shatner. Some of the sponsors this year included Callaway Farms Manufacturing, National Equine Escrow, EasyMileLog, Equine Resources International, LLC, Tallgrass Animal Acupressure, and Energy Medicine, LLC. Women’s Horse Industry Network Update Oct. 11, 2011
We had a couple of big items that were not sold at the auction and I am going to make a list of them and let our membership and people who visit our website bid on them. They should be up by the weekend. These are really great items and I hope we can sell them and make even more money for our charities. We had a small profit from the event on Friday night and our four charities are going to get close to $600.00 each. If we can sell the other items, that will help them get a little more and as we all know, every bit helps. Thanks to everyone who donated items for the auction and who bid on them. Thanks also to our sponsors, National Equine Escrow (a fabulous idea and company), Equine Resources International, LLC (one of the best in the industry; we are sending Lua some get well wishes since she’s been a little under the weather), EasyMileLog (a product that’s a must have!), Tallgrass Animal Acupressure (the authorities on animal acupressure), Callaway Farms (great bedding products and they bought the Country Strong guitar!), and Energy Medicine (she had jury duty and couldn’t attend but she was there with us in “spirit”). Equestrian Aid Foundation Upcoming Events
In Nov., we’ll be hosting a celebration and launch of EAF’s endowment program, which honors legendary horsemen Charlie Weaver. We’ll be at the Alltech National Horse Show in the Gracie Street Garden in Lexington, Ky., which seems natural as Charlie was so successful at the National Horse Shows of the past. Join us as we start a new chapter and be part of a legacy that continues to help those in need for years to come. The EAF is proud to take part in two events coming in October, where we’ll be the beneficiary of silent auctions. The first is a country music party, auction and awards hosted by the Women’s Horse Industry Network. The second is a BBQ and auction held during the Southeastern Fall Classic Hunter Jumper Show’s mini prix near Atlanta. It will be exciting to share EAF’s mission and good works with new friends. Make sure you catch the recaps of the first helmet incentive at the Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover and the 3rd Annual Play It Forward Poker Tournament at the High Roller Reining Classic. It’s always so much fun to see those highly competitive reining riders take it to the poker table! Visit our Facebook page to see some great shots from EAF Friend Alden Corrigan! This event would be impossible without her and Mandi Brumley of Brumley Management Group. Thanks to all for again putting on a terrific show and event. Special thanks to our sponsors FarmVet and an anonymous donor, and to all the wonderful companies that provided a fully stuffed goody bag for the players. Save a Horse, Win a WHINNY!

She will also be donating bottles of her custom-blended Faire Game White wine as door prizes. WHINNY Awards to Honor Horsewoman Elizabeth Shatner
The WHINNY awards are designed to shine the light on people who are using their high visibility to save and protect horses and to promote the horse industry through charitable efforts. Elizabeth Shatner, wife of actor William Shatner, does just that. Born with a love of horses, Elizabeth started riding at the age of five. At the tender age of eight, she got her first horse, a Galiceno pony. By 14, she was teaching horseback riding and participating in young judging competitions with the Indiana Arabian Club, winning several national honors and a scholarship. As a part of the scholarship, she was able to attend a USEF judging clinic. It was during her time as a youth judge that she began to see the beauty of art in nature. She attended Purdue University studying equine and animal science and Butler University in Telecommunications. She eventually became a professional horse trainer. A photo safari trip with her husband in Israel was the spark that ignited her passion for art with photography launching her in another career. She calls her art Flowrosophy, using the nature’s shapes and colors to create pieces that heal the spirit and arouse introspection. Moving back to her love of horses Elizabeth recently unveiled as part of her “Elizabeth Shatner Art by Nature” series the “Unbridled Collection”, a series of digitally painted photographs of horses she has encountered all around the world focusing on Kentucky and the role horses have played in history and their influence on culture. Elizabeth celebrates these “horses in service” by donating portions of the proceeds from the sale of her artwork to equine-related charities. P. J.
