Lexington, KY – August 2, 2011 – Sunny skies and warm temperatures returned to the Kentucky Horse Park for Sunday evening’s $40,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix, sponsored by Audi of Lexington. The nation’s top horse and rider combinations gathered at the Rolex Stadium during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show to compete for the winning title. At the end of the night, it was Germany’s Christian Heineking and River of Dreams who led the victory gallop after an excellent double clear effort. Karen Cudmore and Southern Pride followed with the second place honors, while Rebecca Conway and Twister took home the third place award with the only other two fault-free jump-off rounds.

Karen Cudmore was the first to attempt Wednesday’s short course aboard Southern Pride, owned by Blair Cudmore of Omaha, NE, and they set the bar high. The duo clocked in at 40.203 seconds with all the rails in place, which would eventually earn the second place award.

Lauren Tisbo and Coco135, owned by Tequestrian Farms of Wellington, FL, raced to catch Cudmore’s time, and they were able to do so, but their speed proved costly when they lowered the height of the last vertical. Their four-fault effort in a time of 40.109 seconds would be good enough for the fourth place honors. Rebecca Conway was next in the ring and she claimed the third place award aboard Twister, owned by Blue Hill Farm of Salt Lake City, UT. The duo chose to keep a conservative pace and leave all the fences intact, breaking the beam at 47.733 seconds.

The final rider on course proved to be the best of day. Christian Heineking knew that he would have to be fast and accurate with River of Dreams, owned by Kai Handt of Wylie, TX, and the talented gelding executed the plan beautifully. They kept a fast gallop to every obstacle without even the slightest of rubs. The pair dashed through the timers in 39.530 seconds to jump to the top of the leaderboard and lead the evening’s victory gallop.

“During the jump-off my plan was to go clean,” explained Heineking. “After the combination I was able to get a nice gallop to the oxer, and I made a sharp turn to the wall. River of Dreams just needs a nice ride. He has his own blood and he really wants to do it. I showed him on Thursday and in a small class yesterday, because he had a little break and wasn’t loose yet. This was his first show in a few weeks.”

Sunday marked the conclusion of the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, but the exciting hunter/jumper action will continue at the Kentucky Horse Park on Wednesday with the Kentucky Summer Classic. The week’s highlight events include the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic and the $40,000 Rood & Riddle Grand Prix. The 2011 USEF Pony Finals will get underway August 9-14, followed by the Bluegrass Festival Classic and the KHJA Horse Show.

Jumper Highlights: Wednesday-Saturday

It was beautiful and sunny for the opening day of the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows at the Kentucky Horse Park. Wednesday, riders gathered at the Walnut Ring to compete for top prizes in the Open Jumper classes. Ashlee Bond and Chivas Z were the big winners, claiming the victory in the 1.40m Open Jumper class with the fastest clear effort. In the 1.35m Open Jumper class it was Kaely Tomeu and Bella Blue S that took home the blue ribbon, after they completed a quick and clean jump-off round.

During the 1.40 Open Jumpers, only two riders were able to master the speed track without fault. Bond and Chivas Z, owned by Little Valley Farms of Hidden Hills, CA, were the first to do so, leaving each rail intact and opting for all the inside options to trip the timers at 62.226 seconds. The last horse and rider combination, Derek Petterson of Archer, FL, and Via Dolorosa, were also able to jump clean, but they crossed the finish line four seconds slower in 66.178 seconds to place second. The fastest of Wednesday’s four-fault efforts was Samuel Parot and Clinton’s Dream, owned by Artisan Farms of Mequin, WI, who broke the beam at 66.178 after lowering the height of a fence in the double combination.

Next in the Walnut Ring was the 1.35m Open Jumper class. Young rider Kaley Tomeu showed the away with Belle Bleu S, owned by Spy Coast Farm of East Setauket, NY. The competitive duo completed the first round without fault and advanced to the jump-off, where they once again left all the rails in place. They stopped the timers at 42.799 seconds, which would eventually earn the winning prize. Jill Knowles of Lake Forest, IL, and Condesa Z were also able to advance to the jump-off and leave the fences intact, but their time of 45.245 would prove too conservative with two time faults for the second place prize. Liam Dumont-Walker of Oakville, Ontario, and Lilius had the fastest four-fault round for the third place honors during the day’s class.

Tomeu began riding the talented mare at the beginning of the year and they have quickly made their way up through the ranks. The duo competed in their first grand prix class last week in Cleveland, Ohio, and is excited to show in their second grand prix event Thursday.

It was a late night at the Kentucky Horse Park as riders gathered at the Rolex Stadium to compete in the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show. McLain Ward proved to be the best of the best, dominating the jump-off with the only two double clear efforts aboard Pjotter Van De Zonnehoeve and Vocas to place first and second, respectively. Ashlee Bond and Shane Sweetnam also tackled the short course, but with four faults each they placed third and fourth, respectively.

Thursday’s class was the third of seven grand prix events that make up the Hagyard Challenge Series, sponsored by Hagyard Medical Institute and presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Following the final event in the series, a cash prize of $45,000 is awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series for the Leading Rider Bonus.

McLain Ward managed to advance to the jump-off with two mounts, and tackled the shortened course first aboard Pjotter Van De Zonnehoeve, owned by Louisburg Farm of Boston, MA. The duo left nothing to chance, picking up a fast gallop and never holding back. They jumped easily over each obstacle and raced across the finish line in 32.69 seconds, going straight to the top of the leaderboard and eventually leading the victory gallop.

Shane Sweetnam was next in the ring with Diktator Van De Boslandhoeve, owned by Sweet Oak Farm of Wellington, FL. They had a slightly more conservative speed and caught the back rail at the first oxer in the double combination, incurring four faults in a time of 36.14 seconds for the fourth place award. Ashlee Bond and Chivas Z, owned by Little Valley Farms of Hidden Hills, CA, had trouble at the same fence, but with a quicker time of 33.29 seconds they scored the third place honors.

Ward entered the ring last riding Louisburg Farm’s Vocas, and with the win well in hand the duo kept a more conservative canter and focused on leaving all the rails intact. They were able to successfully accomplish their goal, breaking the beam at 42.514 seconds and taking home the second place prize.

It was another scorcher at the Kentucky Horse Park for the third day of the Kentucky Summer Horse Show. Friday, riders had the opportunity to compete at the Walnut Ring during the High and Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper classes. Taking home the top prize in the High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper class was Christina Kelly aboard Camirage after posting a very quick jump-off. Michael Murphy mimicked her effort during the Low Junior Jumper class with Ultrafox to score the blue ribbon.

Nineteen horse and rider combination attempted the first round in the High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumpers, but only three were able to do so without fault and advance to the short course. Clementine Goutal was the first to do so with Wouter, owned by Cloverleaf Farm of New York, NY, and the pair posted a great effort, opting for all the inside turns while leaving all the fences intact and crossing the finish line in 33.534 seconds, which would be good enough for second place. Hallie Miller and Utopia H 2, owned by Erin Hickey of Cincinnati, OH, took home the third place honors after taking off the back rail of the last oxer for four faults in a time of 37.313 seconds.

The last in the class proved to be the best of the day. Christina Kelly and Diamond Edge Farm’s Camirage easily made their way through the first round track to qualify for the jump-off. They picked up a very quick pace, and although they opted not to take the inside option after the first fence, they were well ahead of Goutal’s time. The duo left every rail in place and blazed across the finish line in 31.749 seconds to score the winning prize for the day.

During the Low Junior Jumpers it was all about speed, as 15 horses advanced to the jump-off and nine completed double clear rounds. Michael Murphy had the day’s best round aboard Ultra Fox, owned by Hampton Farms of Wellington, FL. The duo completed and incredible fast round, leaving a stride out at the last vertical and breaking the beam at 28.689 seconds. Christina Kelly followed in second place with Corona after posting a fault-free round in 30.409 seconds. The third place award went to Katherine Strauss of Southampton, NY, for her ride aboard Chellando Z. The pair did not touch a fence stopped the clock at 31.033 seconds.

The final class of the day was the Low Amateur-Owner Jumpers were once again, 15 horses showed over the short course and nine were clear. The fastest of the double clean efforts was Kenzie Donovan of River Hills, WI, with Volarnah, stopping the clock at 28.370 seconds. Courtney Frederick was right behind Donovan aboard Soulstice, owned by Equestrian Investments of Tulsa, OK, crossing the finish line in 29.795 seconds for the red ribbon. The third place honors went to Saree Kayne of Santa Monica, CA, and Saphir, who broke the beam at 32.077 seconds.

Lexington, KY – July 31, 2011 – The final day of the Kentucky Summer Horse Show was filled with nothing but sunshine and a practically cloudless blue sky. The $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Classic witnessed talented horse and rider combinations striving to showcase their skills and claim the winning title in the Stonelea Ring. Stacey Arani and Bolero led the class from start to finish and eventually led the victory gallop after earning a total score of 185. Olivia Herbert and Capistrano finished second falling five points behind Arani and Bolero, while Abbygale Funk directed Enough Said to the third place award.

Today’s courses were designed by Bobby Murphy and simulated riding over a hunt country with all of the fences set to 3′ with four 3’5” high options and four handy options. Stacey Arani of Dover, MA, and Bolero took an early lead as the first rider of the Classic, scoring a 90 during the first round with three bonus options for a 93 total. Although they were the last to return during the handy round, the duo did not hold back. After executing a slice during an inside turn to an optional fence, they stayed consistent and smooth, receiving scores of 88 with four bonus points for a score of 92. Their two-round total of 185 points landed the pair the blue ribbon prize.

“I had so much fun out there with him,” Arani exclaimed as she patted Bolero’s neck. “He was great in both rounds and I feel as though everything went really smooth and flowed really nicely. The handy was slightly more difficult, but Bolero was so good, he turned back for me, I did a slice I wasn’t intending, but when I was out there and turned, the option presented itself and we took it.”

Since the introduction of the National Derby in 2010, the program has continued to grow and experience success. “The National Derby is a great option for people that don’t want to do the big derby classes,” Arani explained. “I haven’t been able to compete in a classic since I was a kid.” For Arani the USHJA National Hunter Classic provided a fun class with a course that has 3′ jumps with higher options, which make it so she can relax and enjoy the ride. According to the USHJA, the popularity of the International Hunter Derby Program prompted them to develop a separate series of competitions modeled after the Derby but geared toward the up and coming horses and riders. The National Hunter Classic Program was launched in 2010 to provide both horses and riders a place to gain experience in Derby competition at a lower height and difficulty level.

“The one amazing thing about my horse is that he jumps the 3′ as well as he jumps the 3’6″ obstacles,” said Arani. “I can’t believe he does it, but he jumps just as hard and high over the 3′ as he does the 3’6″, and that’s what makes him so good for this, truth be told, he covers up a lot of my mistakes.”

After having Bolero for four years, and originally buying him as a First Year Green, it is apparent that the two have a connection both in the ring and out. “He has given me more than any horse could ever give,” noted Arani. “He’s won so much for me and he always tries so hard; every day I see him, and honestly, I just can’t believe he’s mine.”

Speaking fondly of the Kentucky Horse Shows, Arani admitted that she even moves to Kentucky for the Spring Shows and stays throughout the Summer Shows as well. “I love the Kentucky Horse Shows, they are my favorite due to the exceptionally nice people, wonderful venue, fields, spacious areas to ride, great rings with outstanding footing; it’s my favorite place to show.”

Arani’s sister, Leslie Emerson, lives in Kentucky and Arani has an immense amount of gratitude for the amount of hard work she puts out to make sure that the horses are in shape for the upcoming shows. “She does all the training and all the work in our absence so literally we are able to arrive and jump on,” she explained. “The shows are amazing, and for a mother with three kids, I’m having the time of my life, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Olivia Herbert was aboard Capistrano, owned by Mimi Herbert of Houston, TX, and followed closely behind the winning duo to take the second place ribbon. After earning a score of 87 with four optional points added, Herbert ended the first round with a score of 91 claiming the second place position during the first round. The team returned and executed a seemingly flawless handy round for a score of 85 with four bonus options accumulating a score of 89, bringing their two round total to 180 points and garnering the second place prize. “In the first round, everything went pretty well,” Herbert said. “In the handy round, I think we were ‘handy’, but we could have improved if we had done the hand gallop.”

Herbert and Capistrano have been a duo for the last five years training and showing mostly for the Amateur-Owner Hunters. “He needs you to hold his hand because he can be a little scared of new jumps,” she explained. “To a few of the jumps today I had to ride slightly more cautious, but once he’s happy, he’s very easy to handle and ride.”

The third place award went to Abbygale Funk aboard Enough Said, owned by Emma Wilsky of Aspen, CO. During the first round, they earned a score of 85 plus four bonus points resulting in an 89 and an 83 in the handy with four bonus points, concluding in an 87 taking third place in the handy and solidifying third place for both trips with a combined score of 176.

Kelly Arani and Stars Go Blue, owned by Stacey Arani, received the fourth place award, earning scores of 85 and 75 during the first two rounds to finish with a total of 160. “The hunter classics are really fun, especially since my daughter and I recently started doing them,” said Stacey. Kelly usually does the Junior Hunters with Stars Go Blue and Stacey competes in the Older Amateurs with her horse Bolero.

The fifth place honors went to Ali Naugle of Park City, UT, and Theodore N resulting in an overall score of 155. Shannon Kelly of Naperville, IL, and her mount, Trust Me, secured sixth place with a total of 153.

Earlier in the day, the Amateur-Owner Hunter divisions showed in the Stonelea Ring completing their second day of competition. Reaching the conclusion of the divisions, Holly Labry of Memphis, TN, was aboard Ruby to take home the Amateur-Owner 18-35 Hunter Championship, while Natalie Allen of Mendota Heights, MN, and Val D’isere took reserve championship honors. Stacey Arani and Bolero also claimed the championship award competing in the Amateur-Owner 36 & Over Hunter division, followed by Chris Brown of Oakland, NJ, aboard Up Front for the reserve championship prize. The final division of the morning went to Ellen Mitchell of Brooklyn, NY, and her horse Air Force One the champions of the Amateur-Owner 3’3″, while Sarah Ingram of Nashville, TN, claimed reserve championship tricolor aboard Even Par.

The Kentucky Summer Classic will kick off with thrilling hunter/jumper action at the Kentucky Horse Park on Wednesday. Highlight events will include the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic and the $40,000 Rood & Riddle Grand Prix. August 9th, the 2011 USEF Pony Finals will begin, shortly followed by the Bluegrass Festival Classic and the KHJA Horse Show.

Lexington, KY – July 28, 2011 – It was a late night at the Kentucky Horse Park as riders gathered at the Rolex Stadium to compete in the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show.

Tonight’s class was the third of seven grand prix events that make up the Hagyard Challenge Series, sponsored by Hagyard Medical Institute and presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Following the final event in the series, a cash prize of $45,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series for the Leading Rider Bonus.

Twenty-seven riders competed over tonight’s first round designed by Richard Jeffery of Bournemouth, England, which featured an open water with a scored lath and pole, a oxer-vertical double combination, and an oxer-vertical-vertical triple combination. Only three riders were able complete the technical track without fault and advance to the jump-off. The short course began over a single oxer to two single verticals, a second oxer, the first two obstacles in the triple combination, and finished with a gallop over a large oxer near the gate.

“It was a good course,” noted eventual winner McLain Ward. “Obviously it is very hot, so I am sure that was a factor. It is a great venue with great footing and good lighting. I thought it was a difficult course, but very appropriate.”

“Pjotter is an incredibly careful horse and very fast,” said Ward. “I have made mistakes in jump offs where I have tried to go medium and do just enough, and sometimes if just go and try to win it works out the best. So I was going to try and go as fast as I could and put the pressure on.”

“It was a good nights work, both horses really went nicely I was lucky the other two had a rail so with Vocus I could go a little slow in the jump off,” explained Ward after his victory. “I knew he wasn’t going to be as fast as Pjotter, who is a quick horse, and he jumped well. Ashlee’s horse is very fast and wins a lot, and she is a fast rider so I knew had to do enough at the beginning.”

Ward continued, “Pjotter and Vocus are actually polar opposites. Pjotter is super careful a lot of blood very sensitive. Vocus has no blood, big jumper, super brave, and very quiet. They are really great horses with a great owner, Beth Johnson at Louisburg, and they have had a lot of success this year, so I hope to continue that. They will jump Sunday and then a little rest before going to the Hampton Classic.”

Tonight’s class was part of the Hagyard Challenge Series, which offers a very lucrative $45,000 Leading Rider Bonus to the top rider at the end of the Series. “I think it is wonderful to have the Rider Bonus,” commented Ward. “I think it is a reward for consistency, which is something I always strive towards. They have great events and I think there is a lot of quality over the Series and the winner is usually a pretty strong combination.”

Ward is no stranger to the Kentucky Horse Park, and is happy to be competing at this year’s Kentucky Summer Horse Show. “There is a brilliant stadium, great footing, and a very good organization here,” he said. “Hugh Kincannon has been a great horseman for a long time and they really think about the horse first. You just can’t beat the venue!”

The Kentucky Summer Horse Show will continue tomorrow with the start of the Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumpers and on Sunday the first week of competition will conclude with the $40,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix on Sunday. Riders will return to the Kentucky Horse Park next week for the Kentucky Summer Classic, followed by the 2011 USEF Pony Finals, the Bluegrass Festival Classic, and the KHJA Horse Show.

Lexington, KY – August 1, 2010 – The curtain closed on the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, the first in the summer series, and the last event of the week did not disappoint. The week featured classes such as the NAJYRC finals and the $30,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic, and the most prize money was offered in this evening’s $40,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix, sponsored by Audi of Lexington. As the sun set over the Kentucky Horse Park’s Main Outdoor Stadium it was 20-year-old Hungarian Henri Kovacs garnering the win with Plain Bay Farm’s Sassicaia II in their third Grand Prix victory as a team here in Lexington.

Thirty-two entries competed over today’s 13-obstacle, 1.50 m course, designed by Olaf Petersen, Jr. The technically demanding track included a wall fence, triple bar, a double combination and a triple combination. The distances in the related lines required control of the mount, and a tight time allowed required a precise route to break the beam within the 80-second time allowed, which already had been lengthened from the original 72 second limit.

The first pair to take on the course was also the first duo to go clear: Addison Phillips with her 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare, Teirra, proving that the course could be conquered. Another clear round came nine trips later as Colombian rider Mark Bluman left with his 15-year-old gelding Cataro Ask.

For the next 24 rounds it seemed Phillips and Bluman might go head-to-head in the jump off. The oxer-vertical-oxer triple combination resulted in the most knockdowns, and two riders voluntarily withdrew.

Kovacs and Sassicaia II were in the middle of tonight’s order and had the third clear round. The pair has been a successful duo at the Kentucky Horse Park in the past three years, and Kovacs had a confident style with his competitive mare who has earned top wins internationally.

The next two clear rounds came from two German riders, Christian Heineking with River of Dreams and Christoph Schroeder with Sequoyah Farms Utopia.

The second round of the Grand Prix was even more technical, asking riders to start on a four-stride line included in the first course, then continue on to the double combination by the in-gate. A long run to jump 15, an oxer not in the first round, came next, and it had to be sliced to gain time to bend to the wall fence following it. A roll back to a vertical came next and finally riders galloped home over a large oxer.

Addison Phillips was the first to go in the jump off. Twenty-year-old Phillips did her best, but the outcome was eight faults, as she had a knockdown at the oxer in the first line of the course and again at the “A” element of the double combination.

A bold, fast ride came next from Mark Bluman, and his double clear effort in 40.708 seconds seemed to be a shoo-in for the blue ribbon. Bluman galloped between the fences and sharply sliced fence number 15, and his run home to the last fence had the crowd holding their breath.

Repeating his first fast, clear round was Kovacs, as he bested Bluman’s time as the next in the arena. Kovacs and his mare shaved 1.6 seconds off Bluman’s blistering pace thanks to his on-a-dime turns.

The next riders to attempt the jump off took to the arena, but Heineking had a rail resulting from slicing fence number 15 and took a block off the wall for an eight fault total and the fourth place award. Fellow countryman Schroeder knocked down fences 15 and 8 as well, but with a slower time, securing Kovacs’ victory.

“I went in and I knew my mare is very fast, so I just had to be tight with my turns and coming to the last jump I knew I was on it,” said Kovacs of his jump off round. “She was very good at turning, that’s probably where I won it.”

Kovacs will return to Lexington this fall for the upcoming 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™, as a show jumping representative from Hungary.

“I love it here, first of all because I win,” Kovacs laughed while talking about the Kentucky Horse Park. “It’s such a lovely place, a lot of room. I love it when you can go out and let your horse be a horse.”

Competition will resume at the Kentucky Horse Park next Wednesday, August 4 with the Kentucky Summer Classic, and the featured events will be the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic on Thursday, August 5; the $50,000 Rood & Riddle Kentucky Grand Prix on Saturday, August 7, 2010.

Lexington, KY – July 31, 2010 – A mix of sun and clouds greeted exhibitors today at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Produced by Kentucky Horse Shows LLC, the Kentucky Summer Horse Show runs through Sunday, August 1, 2010 and the Kentucky Summer Classic will get underway on August 3, 2010, and be run through August 8, 2010. Today riders competed for the championship and reserve championship tricolors in the Junior Hunter divisions at the Stonelea Ring.

The Large Junior 16-17 Hunters proved to be a competitive division, with Samantha Schaefer and Vida Blue, owned by Elm Rock, LLC, jumping their way to the tricolor this afternoon. The pair was second and forth today, adding to their two blue ribbons from Friday to garner the championship prize. Maggie Boylan and Poetic took home the Reserve Champion honors for their excellent effort.

“She was really good yesterday and today,” Schaefer beamed. “You would think there’s a lot of pressure riding such a famous horse but she’s so straight forward there really is not. She doesn’t have any tricks and she really tries to win. She jumps every jump a 20, she’s such a winner; you don’t come across those kinds of horses very often.”

The Small Junior 16-17 Hunters were last to go in the Stonelea Arena today with Samantha Schaefer and Bolero taking home the championship ribbon. Bolero and Samantha won three of the four over fences classes and also earned a second place ribbon to score the top spot. Kayla Briel and Enlighten were named the reserve champions as the day came to a close.

“This is the first time I’ve shown this horse,” noted Schaefer. “I was just preparing him before his owner, Staci Arani, shows him next week. Hopefully I’ll get to do him whenever they need, I really liked riding him. He’s like a big large pony with a lot of scope and you can just gallop right around.”

Schaefer continued, “I love coming to Kentucky, the footing here is perfect. The courses rode great and the handy course was fun.”

The Small Junior 15 & Under Hunters were held this morning, with Shawn Casady riding Scout to the tricolor ribbon. The pair won both over fences classes today, adding to their first and second place ribbons during yesterday’s over fences classes. The prize for the reserve championship was awarded to Samantha Batt and Sun King for their notable placings during the week.

“We had two amazing rounds today,” noted Casady after his win. “There were some inside turns in the handy and he just picked right up and jumped amazing. He is an amazing horse to ride, and Terry Brown does a great job with the horse and I really appreciate all that she and Bill Schaub have taught me.”

The next division to compete was the Large Junior 15 & Under Hunters with Lismacbryan Junior and Alyssa Mansfield taking home the championship honors. The pair was second in both over fences classes today, after winning both rounds on Friday. “Yesterday he was really good, I was kind of surprised,” smiled Mansfield. “I hadn’t shown him in a month and a half and I’ve only been showing him since the beginning of May. I’ve just been having fun with him.” The reserve championship title was awarded to Destry Spielberg and her top mount, Rumba.

Tomorrow the Amateur-Owner Hunter divisions will come to a close, awarding championship and reserve championship tricolors to the top horse and rider combinations. The Kentucky Summer Classic will begin next week on Tuesday, August 3, with the Junior Hunter Finals – East Coast.

Lexington, KY – July 31, 2010 – It was another beautiful day at the Kentucky Horse Park, host of the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, and ultimately, the FEI World Equestrian Games this coming fall. Being clean and fast was key for competitors in today’s High Amateur Owners Junior Jumper class. Having a timed first round required riders to be fault free and with the fastest time possible to be in ribbon contention.

The course in today’s class was designed by Richard Jeffery and consisted of fences anywhere from 1.35 meters to 1.45 meters. Beginning with a wide open oxer, riders were then challenged with a vertical-rollback-vertical combination to a galloped open water jump with the pole only being scored. The course went on to include a one stride vertical combination, a triple bar oxer, an oxer to vertical combination, and an oxer with a Liverpool.

It was a bright beginning with the first rider to go, Dr. Fernando Cardenas and Orphan Car who went through a clean round in 74.728, well under the time allowed of 83 seconds. It was just two more rounds until Audrey Coulter registered the second clean round aboard Copernicus Stables, LLC horse Titania, just a tick quicker in 74.301.

Out of a field of 27 competitors, only five riders went clean. Near the end of the class, it was Megan Fellows and her horse, Le Supra, who took a commanding lead with a clean round in 71. 051. But Fellows stay at the top was short-lived as the next to go was Elizabeth Boyd’s First Lady, ridden by Shawn Casady. The pair re-set the stage with another flawless round and stopped the clock in a blazing 69.843, good enough for the win.

“Everything went so well, smiled Casady after his winning ride, “We got out in an open gallop and everything just kept coming up nicely. She jumped very careful and I am learning a lot from her,” He went on to add, “She’s owned by Liza (Elizabeth Boyd) and she wants to keep doing hunters, so First Lady is currently for sale.” When asked about how he is enjoying his time at the Kentucky Horse Shows, Casady replied, “I come to the spring and summer shows a lot because it’s in the middle of the north and south, so a good place. It has good people, a great facility, good footing and jumps, fun rings to ride in, and beautiful hunter rings.”

The next class in the Walnut Arena was the Low Amateur Owners Junior 1.15m-1.25m class. The course was also designed by Richard Jeffery and despite the lowered jumps, it demanded more turns and attention to lines. Starting with an oxer immediately to a rollback to a vertical and next to an oxer, gave the rider a sense of the focus necessary to complete the course. The rest of the course included another vertical, roll-back, vertical combo, a Swedish oxer, and a vertical to oxer combination.

The time allowed was 69 seconds and was also a timed first round. Being that the class consisted of 60 competitors, the ending outcome resulted in a double pinning, or the so called California split, for first.

Stopping the clock at 54.383 was Marquee Cincotta and Vianco, owned by Centennial Farm, to take home a blue ribbon. Alison Register and her horse Droxello were the next fastest time of 54.822 to earn the other blue.

Earlier in the day, the Young Jumper classes were held in the Walnut Ring. Twenty-three duos competed in the mid-summer heat for the top prize in the 7 & 8 Year Old young Jumper Championship Qualifier.

Course designer Richard Jeffrey presented a challenging track for the up and coming jumper horses, which included an optional open water jump, a vertical-vertical combination, and a liverpool. The water obstacles resulted in the most snafus for the young horses, as several balked at the unfamiliar sight. The jump off contained three more jumps that weren’t included in the original 12-obstacle course.

Eleven pairs had a clear effort in the first round to continue to the jump off. The most accurate attempt came from Sergio Campos aboard Kristianna Lindgren’s 7-year-old Holsteiner mare, Circa. Campos negotiated the track expertly as he turned Circa midair and they blazed from jump to jump, keeping each obstacle standing. As Campos cross the timers at 27.179 seconds, which put him in the lead, the crowd was cheering. His time was more than a second faster than runner-up Aaron Vale’s, with Tatra Farm’s Gunner.

Show jumping competition will continue tomorrow, and the main event will be the $40,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix sponsored by Audi of Lexington, starting at 6:00 p.m. in the main stadium. Also featured will be the finale to NAJYRC, as the individual medals are awarded. The NAJC individual final competition begins at 7:30 a.m. in the main stadium, and the NAYRC individual final begins at 2:00 p.m.

Lexington, KY – July 29, 2010 – Another clear day greeted competitors for the Kentucky Summer Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park. The day began in the Stonelea Ring with riders competing for championship and reserve championship honors beginning with the First Year Green Hunters. In the end, it was Cookie Beck an Hidden Creek’s Lennon to claim the First Year Green Under Saddle and go on to earn championship award in the division and Patricia Griffith on Platinum, owned by Lexi Maounis, took home the reserve championship ribbon.

Beck commented on her mount’s performance after claiming the top prize. “He won both (classes) yesterday and made a couple green mistakes today but still managed to jump amazing,” she said. “We bought him in February for a client (Mike Polaski) at WEF and have been showing him since March. He continues to get better and better; we saw so much potential in him. He will go to indoors next and could be a great Derby Horse in his second year.”

Beck has been traveling to the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows for many years. “I love the footing and the fact that you can ride everywhere,” she noted. “The panel of judges, the field and the facility is always great.”

Next in order was the Green Conformation Hunter division and it was Jocelyn Martin and Banderas, owned by Friday’s Farm, which received a pair of blue ribbons for the championship honors. Cookie Beck and Goosebumps, owned by Lisa Cudahy, earned reserve championship award for their excellent effort. “Banderas was very focused and brave today,” said Martin. “The course rode very well. I’ve only showed him since June, and we plan to do next week’s show and later on look into Harrisburg and Washington.”

This was only the second time Jocelyn has competed in the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows, but she is enjoying her stay. “I love the footing and the facility,” she explained. “I love the horse friendly environment.”

In the Second Year Green Hunters, Russell Frey who guided his mount, Inside Scoop owned by Chloe Reid, to the grand prize, the championship honors. The pair earned a first place ribbon yesterday and then went on to win today’s handy round. Jocelyn Martin and Quality Control, owned by Margaret Taylor, remained close enough to capture reserve championship award after winning the under saddle class.

The Professional Hunters Divisions wrapped up today with the Regular Working Hunters. Will Roberts guided Dubari, owned by Gayle Cox, to the championship title after earning a blue ribbon yesterday and two blue ribbons today. Arly Golombek remained in contention and claimed the reserve championship tricolor aboard Ralando Z after winning today’s handy round. “Dubari showed in Atlanta recently and is just getting better and better here at this show,” explained Roberts. “We are still planning to compete in the Derby Finals at the end of the month.”

Tomorrow the Kentucky Summer Horse Show highlights will include the THIS Children’s Medal held in the Murphy Ring and the WIHS Equitation Hunter Phase in the Stonelea Ring. The Kentucky Summer Classic will get underway next week beginning on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 with the Junior Hunter Finals – East Coast. The month long excitement at the Kentucky Horse Park will also feature the 2010 USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals being held August 20-21, 2010.
