Carson City, NV – August 16, 2011 – The 2011 $25,000 Franktown Meadows USHJA International Hunter Derby will take place at the Franktown Meadows Equestrian Facility in Carson City, Nevada on September 5, 2011. As spectators admire the beautiful hunter derby course set upon the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range they will be treated to a display of the sport of fox hunting by Lynn Lloyd of Red Rock Hounds from Reno, NV. Following the fox hunting presentation, the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby will showcase the best horse and rider combinations in the country as they compete for the winning title.
Lynn Lloyd will demonstrate and explain the excitement of fox hunting, the hounds, and the tradition of this wonderful sport. This event will take place at 12:00 p.m. with the derby beginning at 1:00 p.m. Lloyd and her team at Red Rock Hounds will be parading 80 of her fabulous American bred Walker Hounds around the hunter derby course on horseback. Lloyd is excited to gallop around and show off her prized hunting dogs as she enjoys sharing her passion with the public.
“I think it is good exposure for the hounds. It is part of the hunter derby,” noted Lloyd. “The derby came because of field hunting. All of the hunters came from the field or that’s how it all started so this is kind of presenting its roots. I think that they begin to understand that this is where hunters in the show ring began and that hunting in America is still available and we hope it stays available. I want people to understand the freedom and being in nature. I think it grounds people and I want them to remember the fun of horses. Sometimes I think they forget that.”
Lloyd began hunting in England where she became captivated with fox hunting. She explained, “The first time I heard the call of a hound something inside me came alive. I have not stopped hunting since. I feel as though I am the luckiest person on the face of the earth. We have so much land to hunt on in Nevada that you cannot believe it. You never have to stop the hounds or the horses and it is the best way to see nature and the beautiful state of Nevada.”

Carson City, Nevada – March 25, 2010 – The Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby is pleased to announce George H. Morris as one of the four judges comprising the panel for the Derby. An equestrian legend, Morris’ influence has been monumental in the evolution of this sport both as an international competitor and as the Chef d’Equipe for the United States Show Jumping Team. As a knowledgeable and experienced hunter derby judge, Morris will contribute his expertise to the team of four judges at this standalone equestrian event. The derby is set to take place at the Franktown Meadows Equestrian Facility in Carson City, NV on September 19, 2010, and will be a member event of the Chronicle of the Horse/United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) International Hunter Derby Series presented by Dietrich Insurance.
Throughout his equestrian career as an accomplished rider and teacher, Morris has experienced the thrill and challenge of being a rider in the show ring along with coaching the top riders in the world. At the age of 14, Morris not only won the prestigious ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship Finals, but also the American Horse Show Association (now the United States Equestrian Federation) Hunt Seat Medal Finals. Morris was the youngest rider in history to win both events, and from that point on he proceeded to excel as an international rider, a coach, and also as a judge.
One of the original supporters of high performance hunter classes, Morris is passionate about the evolving hunter derby program. Having hunter derbies allows the discipline to be in touch with its roots as it encourages riders to pick up a gallop, and navigate an open field of natural, solid obstacles resembling those once found in fox hunting fields. As one of the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby judges, Morris will be looking for the horse that best portrays the ideal hunter; a forward moving horse that moves well, jumps well, and wears a good expression around the course.
Carson City, Nevada – March 16, 2010 – The Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby and the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation (Parasol) will work in collaboration so as to benefit the Northern Nevada and California area. Parasol has partnered with the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby not only to promote philanthropy in the Northern Nevada and California areas, but also to promote the equestrian sport.

Carson City, Nevada – February 22, 2010 – The Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby is pleased to announce $25,000 of prize money. Comparable to hunter derbies in the east, this event will be the first west coast derby to supply such substantial prize money. The Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby (FM Hunter Derby) will take place at the Franktown Meadows Equestrian Facility in Carson City, NV, and will mark the commencement of the first standalone high caliber west coast hunter derby competition. On September 19, 2010, the FM Hunter Derby will open their derby field to top competitors from around the country.
The FM Hunter Derby will be a member event of the Chronicle of the Horse/United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) International Hunter Derby. The purpose of the hunter derbies is two-fold. According to the USHJA, the derbies are in existence to increase the appreciation of the hunter world, and to increase sponsorship and spectators who invest and attend this event. The second reason for these events are because the USHJA wants to bring the hunter sport back to it’s roots by adding elements such as natural fences, stone walls, and interactive gates set out on land that inspired riders to gallop their horses across fields and over fences during a hunt. Aimee Lafayette, family member of The MacLeans who own Franktown Meadows commented about the prize money, “We have such a beautiful facility to host this event and we want to share that with everyone. Located on the foothills of the Sierra Mountain Range, we have always been very lucky to have such breathtaking grounds. The riders and participants will feel the same as the riders that originated our sport felt each time they embarked on a hunt. Our main goal in offering a great amount of prize money is to align our goals with those of USHJA. We want more spectators, media, and sponsors to increase their appreciation and adulation for the hunter sport. We have a strong passion towards this sport and are so happy to share our facility with everyone.”
