Professional Horseman’s Course at KHP Gives Participants a Leg Up in the Horse Industry

LEXINGTON, KY (October 21, 2010) – The Kentucky Horse Park’s Education Department will offer a unique, hands-on educational opportunity unequalled by other equine schools.  Students in the Professional Horseman’s Course, January 18 – May 6, 2011, will have the opportunity to study and work with more than 30 breeds of horses at the Kentucky Horse Park while acquiring the knowledge and skills to launch a productive career in the equine industry.  This program challenges students with daily, hands-on, practical interaction with horses in a variety of different environments, health issues and training levels, as well as broadens their overall level of equine understanding.

Classes and practicum work in stable management, anatomy and physiology, reproduction, marketing and career development all complement the hands-on side of the program to ensure a well-rounded education.  Students will also receive an introduction to – and have experience with – breeding practices, disciplines of carriage driving, racing and the World Equestrian Games disciplines.

Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC, Hosts SPEAKS Program at the Kentucky Horse Park

Lexington, KY – June 2, 2010 – On Friday, May 21, 2010, third graders from Simmons Elementary School in Woodford County, Kentucky, had a chance of a lifetime. The young children visited the spectacular Kentucky Horse Park as part of the SPEAKS program. The acronym stands for Supporting and Promoting Equine Awareness in Kentucky Schools (SPEAKS) program. The SPEAKS program is a way to take equine education to the next level. Bobby Murphy, who has been the main component of spreading the SPEAKS vision, visited Simmons Elementary School in December 2009 and found that the program can be just as effective in the classroom as it could be at the Kentucky Horse Park.  Five months later he fulfilled his promise to bring the children to the Kentucky Horse Park for this wonderful opportunity.

Representatives from Young Professionals Committee of the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA), ambassadors from Just World International, and young riders from the Kentucky Spring Classic were present to teach the children many basics about the sport and what makes horses so important in their lives. › Continue reading

Wellington, Florida – January 14, 2010 – Renowned course designer and horse show manager Bobby Murphy has taken equine education to the next level by implementing the Supporting and Promoting of Equine Awareness in Kentucky Schools (SPEAKS) program. The SPEAKS program is designed to work with elementary schools and community groups to develop knowledge of the equine industry.  From demonstrations at the horse park, to visits at the equine educational museums, SPEAKS goal is to educate the future of society about the importance and impact of the horse industry in their lives.

Inspired by the late Betsy Fishback, Bobby Murphy has great hopes for the future, and reflected on the origin of SPEAKS, recounting, “Betsy made my work with children on equine education, a passion for me,” and as such, “the program has been a part of my life ever since.”

During this past holiday season, Murphy made a trip home to Lexington, Kentucky to further develop SPEAKS. While in Lexington, he met with childhood friend, Sara Thorton.  Thorton grew up in Lexington on former Kentucky Governor Brereton Jones’ Thoroughbred farm, Airdrie Stud.  Thorton recalled her most memorable moments of growing up on a horse farm, the foremost of which was “waking up in the middle of the night to go down to the barn with my family to see the foals being born,” adding that, “as the foals grew older, I used to come home after school and ride the horses around the farm.”  This memory meant the world to Thorton. AHorseBlog – American Horse Council Announces Opportunity for USDF Members

Saddle Up for the Congressional Cavalry Program!

In an effort to better represent and serve the horse industry in Washington, DC, the American Horse Council (AHC) has organized a new grassroots effort, entitled “The Congressional Cavalry Program.” The AHC represents the horse industry before Congress and the federal regulatory agencies on important national issues. The AHC invites USDF members to participate in this program and help make a difference in federal legislation and regulations that affect the horse industry.

All USDF members who wish to be involved in grassroots efforts in Washington, DC can join the Congressional Cavalry Program at their discretion. The purpose of the program is to identify people in each Congressional District across America who will agree to contact their Representative/Senators or other federal officials when asked by the AHC. Contacts from constituents are the most effective way to persuade a Member of Congress or a federal official to take action with respect to a particular issue regarding horses.

Individuals will be mobilized when there is a need for grassroots contacts, such as letters and telephone calls. Members of the program will be put on an E-mail or telefax list so they can be contacted and activated quickly. The AHC will provide participants with whatever information is necessary. Any level of commitment by participants is welcome.

The Congressional Cavalry Program might eventually provide the base for additional activities like visits with Members of Congress back home; invitations to Members of Congress to visit a facility or event; and reports to Congress about activities back in the district that illustrate the importance of the horse industry to the state and local economy, the sport, and recreational life.

If you want to sign up for or have any additional questions about the Congressional Cavalry Program, please contact the American Horse Council at 202-296-4031 or ahc@horsecouncil.org.
