KY Horse Council’s Equine Disaster Relief Fund Recipient of Fund Raising EffortLexington, KY, June 9, 2011 -The Kentucky Horse Council’s (KHC) US Disaster Relief Fund, which provides a central coordination point for Kentucky’s efforts to support horses affected by natural disasters, was chosen as the recipient of Horse Radio Network’s (HRN) “Horse World Gives Back” program. Horse World Gives Back is a nationwide charitable initiative aimed at uniting the horse community in a fund raising drive to benefit horses and horse owners affected by the recent flooding and tornadoes across the United States. HRN hosted a 3 hour LIVE broadcast on June 6, 2011 called the Horse World Gives Back Radiothon, followed by a Horse World Gives Back Retail Day on June 7, 2011. Participating retailers gave back 5% of the day’s sales to KHC’s US Disaster Relief Fund and the American Red Cross. Through the radiothon and retail day, KHC raised money to supplement its US Disaster Relief Fund. The US Disaster Relief Fund provides feed and temporary housing for horses across the country displaced by weather and other natural disasters. Neighbors Helping Neighbors – Equestrians Helping EquestriansApril 27th, 2011 brought devastating tornadoes to Alabama and neighboring states. The destruction is extremely wide spread and has left many areas a wasteland. Families have lost loved ones, their homes, and their basic way of life and are now faced with the daunting task of starting over completely from scratch. They have lost many beloved pets, horses, and farm animals and have no way of caring for the ones that remain. As members of the equestrian community, we feel we must do what we can to help those that are in so much pain and need. The Birmingham Dressage & Combined Training Association is teaming up with Rhonda Johnson-Bowles from Land O’Lakes Purina Feeds, The Alabama Horse Council, Cahaba Pony Club, and the US Pony Club South Region to help the equine and pet victims of these destructive tornados. BDCTA requests your donations of basic horse & pet supplies, such as buckets, water troughs, fencing materials, veterinary supplies, fly spray, halters and leads, shavings, dog runs, dog and cat crates, feed bowls… anything horse or pet care related. Monetary donations will also be accepted and will be used to purchase needed supplies. 100% of all donations will be distributed to those in need. The Dressage on the First Coast Spring 2011 show program “Thank You” ad from Jerry RehkopfMy Northeast Florida Dressage Association (NFDA) club’s Dressage on the First Coast Spring 2011 show is coming up this weekend (April 9-10th) and boy has there been a flurry of work to do to get everything ready for it. Everything else has had to be put on hold, even getting my newsletter out before the end of March. My attempt to get it out the week before that was thwarted by a frustrating technical issue of my ESP not ‘talking’ to my ISP which took me 4 days to finally get resolved. Hence my March newsletter has become my Spring newsletter or a March/April newsletter. My wonderful husband offered to do an advertisement for the show program as the EVP of HorsesintheSouth.com. We were trying to decide what he would say in the program ad as I already have an ad for HorsesintheSouth.com in it, so we decided that we would just thank all of our current clients, banner advertisers and affiliates. My graphic designer, Beth Webb, who also did the show program for us on a last minute notice just told me to write up some text and she would make an ad out of it. Well, 3-4 hours later, I came up with this huge text-heavy ad that feels like I am thanking everyone for an academy award or something, it is so long! I didn’t know where to stop, I am so lucky to have such wonderful clients and advertisers. And, these are just the current ones! So I figured this would also be a good editorial so that all of the HorsesintheSouth.com readers and AHorseBlog.com readers will see these accolades instead of it just being confined to a horse show program.
It reads like this, but the layout that Beth did is gorgeous, as is the show program that she did for the Dressage on the First Coast. Tip of the Week – Equine First Aid – Be Prepared! The most common equine emergencies are: colic, skin wounds, eye injuries, tying up, severe lameness (abscess, fracture, laminitis), and infections (bacterial, viral). Having an emergency kit of medications from your veterinarian can help you treat your horse until the veterinarian arrives. In some cases it may save your horse’s life or save a vet call. Always advise your vet of emergency situations and ask for advice on treatment before administrating any medications. If there is an open wound, cover it to keep it clean. Apply a firm wrap to control bleeding and minimize swelling while waiting for your vet’s advice. If there is still bleeding from a limb, a tourniquet may be applied above the wound to decrease the blood flow. For colic, giving KAM’s KLPP (a pre & probiotic) and hand walking may help. Having FRE liquid, a natural anti-inflammatory, available for injuries will help with the pain, heat, and swelling. You can support the immune system with transfer factors (TF-Formula) to help prevent or fight infections (bacterial, viral, and fungal). TF may be used alone or in combination with drug therapies. As a general rule, don’t give any grain or oral medications without checking with your vet if you are unsure of the horse’s problem. Japan Equine ReliefThe WHIA is collecting supplies and cash for equine businesses in Japan following the massive earthquake. We are working with the U.S. state department and Japanese associations. Details will follow soon! Executive Director Catherine Masters lived in Japan for five years and her heart is broken by the horrible natural disaster in Japan. She is asking all of the WHIA members to help her raise money and supplies for the victims and the horses. As soon as we are confident that our money and supplies will get to the proper authorities, we will contact you again. As you know, the breeders, the riding clubs and the horse owners will need everything. CASH is probably the best thing we can send. Due to massive destruction it may take us a little while to get the proper channels working with us. Thanks for helping us ahead of time! Catherine Masters Women’s Horse Industry | P.O.
