As you may or may not have heard, NARHA/PATH, the creator of the Horses for Heroes program, therapeutic riding for Wounded Warriors, has abandoned the use of the name Horses for Heroes and will be re-branding this therapeutic riding program. The other Horses4Heroes, our organization is able-bodied, affordable horseback riding for returning combat veterans and the entire family, which also needs healing and therapeutic interactions with horses! In addition, we serve all active duty military personnel, First Responders, critical care and hospice nurses and others who have physically dangerous and emotionally demanding jobs.

Horses4Heroes, Inc., created in 2006 and based in Las Vegas, is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization that provides affordable recreational, educational and health & wellness programs via a national network of participating facilities in 20 states. And we’re growing! Membership for Heroes who want access to affordable, deeply discounted horseback riding programs and activities can join for a one-time fee of just $25 per family. Families who need the health & wellness programs and are not looking for our other services, may participate free of charge.

Our health & wellness programs are branded Stay Strong and include Back in the Saddle for adult men and women and Stay Strong for families and individuals. These programs are offered free of charge and sponsorship dollars and donations are being sought to help offset the costs.

Our newest Stay Strong program for children ages 8-10, simply called, 8«9«10: Ride to Win!, is teaching essential life and leadership skills for boys and girls to use in Middle School and beyond. It is an important program for our communities right now and is designed to create fewer targets for playground and cyberspace bullies!

In addition to what we are offering for our military families and returning combat veterans, we are the only non-profit equestrian organization that is:

* Making horseback riding affordable for families;
* Bringing new people into the horse world and creating a passion for horses;
* Creating a new customer base for riding instructors, lesson barns, horse camps and equestrian manufacturers and western lifestyle retailers;
* Bringing in children as young as 2; and
* Saying “thank you” to the men and women who serve and have served.

We serve all ages, all riding levels and support all breeds and equestrian disciplines and events from reining to roping, jumping to jousting and horse shows to rodeos. In June, the Pinto Horse Assn. of America added to its world show line up, for the first-time ever, a Horses4Heroes Walk-Trot Open class that was open and free to anyone with ties to the military or veterans.

When we first introduced this program to Nellis AFB five years ago, we received the following anonymous email from the base. It touched our hearts then and strengthens our resolve today to fulfill our mission to make the dream of affordable and accessible horseback riding a reality to our troops, our veterans and their families.

“Children that have parents deployed might need a friend. There are some good friends and there are bad friends, but the best friend in the world is a horse. Horses can listen to you and really make you happy if you are down. Some kids may have a hole in their heart from their parent’s absence, and the horse could fill that hole with his love. You may not know it but this organization means more to these kids than you may think.

“Now for the parents who are deployed. Some parents might not worry about their kids because they are so worried about getting killed and some parents worry about their kids all the time and how they are doing and if they are being taken care of. For the parents that worry about their kids this organization may help. They will know that their kids are enjoying themselves and maybe aren’t thinking about the war and the welfare of their parents. Since they are worrying less about their kids it will help them fight better and give them a better chance at staying alive. Now H4H is helping protect our country!”

Thanks for your time. If you have any questions about Horses4Heroes USA, please give me a call or shoot me an email.

The events were held October 6-8 in Nashville, Tennessee.

On Thursday night the red carpet was rolled out to identify and recognize people in the horse industry who are using their visibility to promote the welfare of the horse industry. Some of the WHINNY recipients who attended included Elizabeth Shatner (who not only received the award but picked up the one given to her husband Bill), country music superstar Lynn Anderson, Madeleine Pickens, Mike and Martha Borchetta, and Bonnie Garner. The event started off with live entertainment by some of country music’s most promising up and coming stars, including Keith Bryant, Dee Ann Dominy, Mark Wayne Glasmire, and Cassidy Lynn.

In addition to the live entertainment, there was both a silent and live auction benefiting several equine charities. Lynn Anderson served as the auctioneer and helped sell some wonderful items such as a signed guitar from the movie Country Strong by Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw and several paintings by Elizabeth Shatner. Some of the sponsors this year included Callaway Farms Manufacturing, National Equine Escrow, EasyMileLog, Equine Resources International, LLC, Tallgrass Animal Acupressure, and Energy Medicine, LLC.

The recipients received a stunning crystal horse head and a gift bag filled with items from the members of the Women’s Horse Industry Network.

The entire three days of events were videotaped by Wayne Williams for his Speaking with Horses TV network and broadcast around the country via cable systems and online.

Here’s what some of the recipients had to say:

“It was a wonderful event and we met some really great people. It was also a very moving event and I found myself with tears in my eyes from time to time. Knowing how much the people in the room cared about horses was really wonderful,” said Mike Borchetta.

“Dear Catherine,
Once again, thank you for the honor. I had an incredible time and met some very interesting and delightful people. Thank you also for taking care of Nina and Donna, the two ladies from Horse Haven. They were able to make some important connections. The goodie bags are spectacular. I am still going thru them and discovering more and more great things. My WHINNY is on the mantle next to the Grammy. Thank you again, so very much.”
Bonnie Garner

Dear Catherine,
THANK YOU SO MUCH for including me in this company of incredible Horse Women. The evening had me in tears and laughter! What wonderful ladies you brought together. Congratulations on your foresight and your fortitude in pulling this event off. I hope you know that you’ve opened up “Pandora’s Box” and you will not be allowed to stop now! I have a couple of notable ladies I’d like to nominate for next year’s “WHINNY AWARDS”.
With love and respect,
Lynn Anderson

Photos are on our website.

Plans are underway for the 2nd Annual WHINNY awards and dates and location will be announced soon.

The next two days were spent attending seminars and networking with women from around the world at the 3rd Annual Business Networking Expo. “There was something for everyone from our exhibitors and a lot of valuable information shared by our speakers,” states Catherine Masters, President of the network.

The 4th Annual Business Networking Expo will again coincide with the WHINNY awards next year but the awards dinner will be held the last day of the conference instead of the first evening. “Most of us were worn out from the awards dinner and by having it the last night of the conference, I think it will give everyone a chance to be rested for the seminars and panels,” Masters add.

Organizers are looking at Lexington, Kentucky as a possible location for next year’s events.

Whew… I have now recovered from the events and have put a wrap up and photos on our website. So, please take a few minutes and see what’s there and send your friends who are not members to it as well. We’d like to let everyone know how successful things were.

We had a couple of big items that were not sold at the auction and I am going to make a list of them and let our membership and people who visit our website bid on them. They should be up by the weekend. These are really great items and I hope we can sell them and make even more money for our charities. We had a small profit from the event on Friday night and our four charities are going to get close to $600.00 each. If we can sell the other items, that will help them get a little more and as we all know, every bit helps. Thanks to everyone who donated items for the auction and who bid on them. Thanks also to our sponsors, National Equine Escrow (a fabulous idea and company), Equine Resources International, LLC (one of the best in the industry; we are sending Lua some get well wishes since she’s been a little under the weather), EasyMileLog (a product that’s a must have!), Tallgrass Animal Acupressure (the authorities on animal acupressure), Callaway Farms (great bedding products and they bought the Country Strong guitar!), and Energy Medicine (she had jury duty and couldn’t attend but she was there with us in “spirit”).

Thanks to everyone who attended, was a speaker and who exhibited. The majority of our exhibitors did a lot of business and many have told me that they are coming back next year. EasyMileLog sold out all the products she brought with her! And, everyone learned valuable information and made some useful contacts. Lots of business was done… again. And, some lifelong friendships were made… again.

Thanks to all of my many friends who attended and who continue to support me and my efforts to help each and every one of you. You know who you are. I hope you enjoyed the awareness items I gave as gifts.

Thanks also to the many volunteers who helped us make the events so successful. Shout outs to: Nancy Yonko, Deb Kidwell (a great house guest who made it her mission to take out my trash!), Randi Thompson (the absolute QUEEN of social networking and who handled registration at the WHINNY awards and had info about the events on the social networking sites by Saturday evening!), Charlene Hadwin (formerly Peterson), Sheryl Kursar, Nick and Colleen Kelly (wasn’t she great with the mic?), Nanette Levin, Teri Swanson who helped me at registration, and the one and only Rachael Burton. I could not have done it without all of you. Pat yourselves on the back for a job well done!

And a massive shout out to Wayne Williams who worked his you know what off capturing the events for television. If you need TV exposure or advertising, he is the guy to call. Great to work with and he is really starting to go places with his TV show. Watch for news from Wayne soon. And visit his website: Speaking of Horses TV.

And now that these events are over, I am ready to help all of your market and promote your products and services.

Remember, if you have not taken an ad or a listing in our BIG XMAS BOOK, you have until Friday to get in. If you took an ad in our 2011 WYSK book, you get a free ad in the BIG XMAS BOOK. Do not send us a new ad; we will use the one from the WYSK book. This is the FINAL deadline and we hope to have it out by the middle of next week.

Our next newsletter will go out November 1st so if you want to put something in it, send it to us no later than October 22. Send it to Debby Lening at womenspetbiz@yahoo.com. Make sure you tell her it’s for the WHIN newsletter.

Let us know what you are doing and what you need. If you are traveling and want to save some money on hotel bills, let us know. I bet some of our members would let you stay with them.

The world is a different place than it used to be and we are all in this together. It’s important that we let our members know what you need and also what you can offer. We are a business network but we are also a network of friends. We have the best women in the horse industry as members and please make it a point to get to know as many as possible. And let your friends who are not members know about us. The more members we have the more business we can do.

Have a great week and let me know if there is anything I can do for you. The phone works best so if you need something, please feel free to give me a call at 615-730-7833. I am rested now and know I can put a couple of sentences together…

Cheers!
Masters, who runs the network is a former music industry executive and felt that the attendees who are coming from around the world would really enjoy visiting “Music City”. It appears she is right.

“This is going to be something that everyone will remember for the rest of their lives,” Masters adds.

Nashville, TN – The Women’s Horse Industry Network has announced that Elizabeth Shatner has been selected as a recipient of a WHINNY award for her efforts in the horse industry.

The WHINNY awards are designed to shine the light on people who are using their high visibility to save and protect horses and to promote the horse industry through charitable efforts. Elizabeth Shatner, wife of actor William Shatner, does just that.

Born with a love of horses, Elizabeth started riding at the age of five. At the tender age of eight, she got her first horse, a Galiceno pony. By 14, she was teaching horseback riding and participating in young judging competitions with the Indiana Arabian Club, winning several national honors and a scholarship. As a part of the scholarship, she was able to attend a USEF judging clinic. It was during her time as a youth judge that she began to see the beauty of art in nature. She attended Purdue University studying equine and animal science and Butler University in Telecommunications. She eventually became a professional horse trainer.

A photo safari trip with her husband in Israel was the spark that ignited her passion for art with photography launching her in another career. She calls her art Flowrosophy, using the nature’s shapes and colors to create pieces that heal the spirit and arouse introspection. Moving back to her love of horses Elizabeth recently unveiled as part of her “Elizabeth Shatner Art by Nature” series the “Unbridled Collection”, a series of digitally painted photographs of horses she has encountered all around the world focusing on Kentucky and the role horses have played in history and their influence on culture. Elizabeth celebrates these “horses in service” by donating portions of the proceeds from the sale of her artwork to equine-related charities.

Mrs. Shatner’s charitable works extend well beyond her personal donations. For instance, she is highly active in the “Hollywood Charity Horseshow”, an event started by her husband William two decades ago that has raised millions of dollars for those in need. In addition, the Shatners’ horse “All Glory” was chosen as the Celebration Horse at Breyerfest in 2010 and earned enough money for Elizabeth to help spearhead a NARHA Horses for Heroes pilot at the Central Kentucky Riding for Hope; a program that helps disabled vets use horses as a means of physical therapy and healing. This inspired Elizabeth to deepen her charitable work and found the All Glory Project, Inc. The All Glory Project is a non-profit campaign of consciousness to thank our wounded heroes, human and animal alike, as well as their families. Through her non-profit, Elizabeth is continually networking with different organizations with a mission to “join up” and Advocate, Educate and Enable animal-assisted therapy centers already in existence, allowing them to initiate and expand programs for those affected by military service.

Today, Elizabeth remains active in the ring and the judging circuit (she holds seven judges’ cards)! She still competes in a variety of breeds and disciplines, recently placing Third, aboard Boston Legal, in the 20011 World’s Championship Horse show. Along with her husband Bill, was on the Governor’s Advisory Board for the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky, and was the Honorary Chair for the 2010 American Royal National Championships. In her role as Chairwoman of the 2011 Lexington Junior League 75th Anniversary Horse Show Gala, Mrs. Shatner continued her mission of thanking the souls who serve our nation by conceiving an “American Heroes Night”, which was free for all veterans, active duty, national guard and their families, and which included a performance by Bravehearts, a veterans’ therapeutic riding group and color guard. Further info on Mrs. Shatner’s work can be found at www.elizabethshatner.com and www.AllGloryProject.org.

“We are downright thrilled to be able to present Elizabeth with a WHINNY award for her efforts in the horse world. Her contributions as a horse enthusiast, a judge and her charitable efforts go a long, long way in bringing awareness and support to our industry,” states Catherine Masters, Executive Director of the Women’s Horse Industry Network.

The WHINNY awards will be held Thursday, October 6th at the Radisson Hotel Opryland. The festivities include dinner, live country music, a silent auction to benefit several equine charities and the presentation of the awards. It is part of the Women’s Horse Industry Network’s annual business networking meeting that will be held on October 7-8 at the Radisson. Tickets can be ordered on line or by calling 615-730-7833.

The award dinner and presentation will be held October 6, 2011 at the Radisson Hotel Opryland. The event is part of the Women’s Horse Industry Network’s 3rd Annual Business Networking Expo which takes place October 7-8 at the Radisson as well. In addition to the WHINNY awards there will also be the RHYTHM & HOOVES silent auction benefiting several equine related charities.

Designed to shine the light on high profile individuals who use their visibility to save horses and promote the horse industry, this year’s WHINNY recipients include: Madeleine Pickens of Saving Americas Mustangs, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, William Shatner, Elizabeth Shatner, Mike and Martha Borchetta, and Bonnie Garner, to name a few. A complete list of winners is on our website.

The event will be videotaped for a delayed broadcast on HRTV in October.

“This is the first year of the event and we could not be happier with the people who are recipients of this award. There are a lot of great people who have a passion for the horse industry and who spend their time and money making it a better place for all involved, including the horses. It will my pleasure to give them these awards. It is wonderful that some of the equine companies, such as National Equine Escrow are stepping up to help support the event so that we can make it something very special,” states Catherine Masters.

National Equine Escrow, LLC is a full-service escrow company for equine sales doing business with customers throughout the United States. Their mission is to provide convenience in horse sales, and to protect the integrity of the horse industry by creating a policy of transparency and trust in horse transactions. Their employees are experienced horsemen and professional trainers with decades of experience in the horse business.

“This is one of the best ideas I’ve seen for the horse industry. It’s something that has been needed in the horse world for a long time and will go a long way in making sure horse sales transactions are done right,” Masters adds.

In addition to being a sponsor of the WHINNY awards, National Equine Escrow will be an exhibitor at the 3rd Annual Business Networking Expo and participate on a panel discussion about new products and services.

“We are very happy to be a sponsor of the WHINNY awards. WHIN and its members are a great group and we are looking forward to doing business with them and helping them with their future horse sales. I am excited about being on one of the panels to discuss how our new service can help everyone,” states Jill Elsey, President of National Equine Escrow.
