American Horse Publications Awards Excellence in Equine Publishing Media

June 18, 2011 – San Diego, CA, welcomed American Horse Publications members to “America’s Finest City” and AHP recognized their “finest” in equine publishing media during the AHP “Hoofprints in the Sand” Seminar. The three-day conference held June 16-18 was jam-packed with educational sessions and activities, but on Saturday evening, the winners in the AHP Annual Awards Competition took center stage.

Sixty-nine American Horse Publications members were named finalists in the 2011 AHP Annual Awards Contest for material published in and dated 2010. Participation in this year’s contest represented a record-breaking 118 AHP members and 839 entries, an increase of 57 over last year. Held since 1974, the AHP Annual Awards Contest provides members with an opportunity to be recognized for excellence in equine publishing as well as professional critiques for improvement.

Always an anticipated event, the awards presentations were held Saturday, June 18, 2011, during the AHP “Hoofprints in the Sand” Seminar in San Diego. The evening began with a reception co-sponsored by Dover Saddlery and Branch Smith Printing and was followed by the Awards Banquet sponsored by Publishers Press. Breyer Animal Creations sponsored the centerpieces, and one lucky attendee at each table took a Breyer “Under the Sea” model horse home. This year’s beach-themed banquet was enhanced by elegant scenic décor produced and sponsored by Red Pony Productions, LLC and If Your Horse Could Talk.

The coveted General Excellence Award is presented to publications who fulfill their statement of purpose and show excellence in editorial content and design. Honorable mention is presented in classes with over five entries. General Excellence in the Tabloid/Newspaper category went to Quarter Horse News, a biweekly tabloid covering the cutting, reining and reined cow horse industries published by Cowboy Publishing Group. Thoroughbred Times, a national newsweekly magazine of Thoroughbred racing, claimed honorable mention.

Improve Your Seat & Learn from the Best via Trilogy Saddles’ ‘Developing Your Dream Seat’ Drawing

Trilogy Saddles encourages dressage riders to develop their very own dream seat, so they’re helping FIVE (5) lucky winners receive coaching from some of the very best riders in the world.

The Developing Your Dream Seat program reflects the philosophy at the core of the company. “We want to inspire and educate riders to take responsibility for their own riding position, and to get the training they need to improve their own seat,” says Debbie Witty, Trilogy Saddles founder and president. “Plus, all riders should have dreams and goals, and we’d like to help some of our customers make theirs come true.”

In the Developing Your Dream Seat drawing, Trilogy Saddles customers of all levels and abilities will have an equal opportunity to learn from the best: Winners will receive two lessons from the participating Trilogy Saddles Ambassador of their choice; a ‘lunch & learn’ session with Witty to help understand the mechanics of saddle fit and rider position and how they affect his or her horse’s individual response, performance, and well-being; and a custom fitting of their new Trilogy saddle.

HERDA – Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia – Buyer Beware!

HERDA – Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia – Buyer Beware! Check the bloodline of any AQHA, APHA, ApHC and cross-bred horses of these breeds before you buy! Check your horses’ bloodlines before you breed, too! This is a heart-wrenching story from a woman whose mare was diagnosed with HERDA.

By Tara Flanagan and Robin Davison, March 2011: From across the paddock, Penelope (registered name, Quality Sensation) is a striking four year-old paint mare who has nothing but potential. Her athletic build, to-die-for lope and easy disposition indicate that she inherited all the right things.

Robin's horse, Quality Sensation. Click on image for larger view.

But get a little closer and you’ll notice the discoloration on her back from saddle sores. The skin around her withers feels corrugated. It’s easily manipulated and doesn’t snap back into place –almost as if the horse is severely dehydrated.

I bought my mare in November 2009 and had her hauled from Florida to Colorado. Penelope had an injury on her right hind leg from the trip that required a vet’s attention, and which was unusually slow to heal. Mostly, I was filled with the excitement that came with getting the horse I had dreamed about – Penelope and I were going to show at the National Western Stock Show someday.

Typical of many horses who are afflicted by HERDA, or hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia, Penelope started to show signs of the disorder when she developed saddle sores that did not heal in March 2010, about two months after she was started under saddle. A DNA test from UC-Davis revealed that Penelope is HRD/HRD – affected – meaning that she has two copies of the HERDA gene.

Affected horses develop severe lacerations, hematomas, and seromas from minor trauma, frequently resulting in disfiguring scars. Due to their persistent wounds, most horses cannot be ridden or shown competitively and are humanely euthanized. Many horses affected with HERDA are often not diagnosed until they are 1-2 years of age, but severely affected horses may develop signs shortly after birth. Symptoms include stretchy skin that feels “mushy” or “doughy” to the touch. Penelope’s mane, for example, has that doughy feel.  Contrary to what the name implies, the disease affects tissues throughout the horse’s body.  The proportion of carrier horses is high in certain Quarter Horse disciplines such as cutting, where 28.3% of elite cutting horses are carriers. Therefore, cutting horses that carry HERDA are more prevalent than halter horses that carry HYPP. In fact, 14 of the top 100 cutting sires are carriers whose offspring have earnings in excess of 116 million dollars. The performance traits of these select carriers bloodlines are highly desired, likely increasing the prevalence of HERDA. Although cutting horses have been the subject of most of the study and press about HERDA, the incidence of HERDA in pleasure and reining horses is on the rise. (information provided by Dr. Ann Rashmir)

HERDA is found in some descendants of the AQHA sire Poco Bueno. Researchers have named four deceased Quarter Horse stallions that were carriers and produced at least one affected HERDA foal. They are: Dry Doc, Doc O’Lena, Great Pine, and Zippo Pine Bar. These stallions all trace to Poco Bueno through his son and daughter, Poco Pine and Poco Lena. Other breeds affected are the American Paint Horse (APHA), the Appaloosa (ApHC) and any other breed registry that allows out-crossing to AQHA horses.  (this information found on http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/ment2befarms/herda.html).

As far as the odds go, if you breed a carrier to another carrier you have a 25 percent chance of producing an affected horse (HRD/HRD), 50 percent chance of producing another carrier (N/HRD) and a 25 percent chance of producing a normal horse (N/N). When a normal horse (N/N) is crossed with a carrier (N/HRD), 50 percent of the offspring may be carriers (N/HRD) and 50 percent may be normal (N/N); none of the offspring will be affected (HRD/HRD).

I now board Penelope at a local farm, where she enjoys a shady enclosure. It’s too risky to turn Penelope out with most horses, but we have found a few equine companions for occasional turnout. For now, Penelope is doing well. I have learned that these horses can live many comfortable years with the disorder – provided they aren’t ridden and are kept in a very safe environment.

So, what can you do? If you plan to buy a quarter horse, paint or appaloosa 4 years old or younger that has several crosses to Poco Bueno, it’s wise to get him/her tested. Require a HERDA test as part of a pre-purchase exam if the horse has Poco Bueno as far back as seven or eight generations.  Just looking at the pedigree on registration papers might not be adequate to determine if the horse is at risk.  The test only costs $40 (here is the link:  http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/horse.php).  And it stands to reason that you can’t produce a HERDA affected horse if you don’t breed two carriers.

For more information please contact Dr. Ann Rashmir at the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University G209 Veterinary Medical Center, East Lansing, MI 48824-1314, Office (517) 355-1866.

A few quick facts:

HERDA/hyperelastosis cutis was first reported by Lerner and McCracken in 1978.  The DNA test at UC-Davis has been available for 4 years.

2% of all Quarter Horses are carriers of the HERDA gene. (August 1, 2010 issue of Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association)

AQHA has a ruling on HERDA currently up for review:

Adult Amateur Rider Dr. Leigh Kent Sweeps Field at Wellington Classic Spring Challenge to Win Trilogy Saddles’ Best Seat Award

Images are courtesy PhelpsPhotos.com.

Dressage shows are family affairs for Southern-born working mom Leigh W. Kent, DDS, PhD, and at the Wellington Classic Spring Challenge she had an entire cheering section to celebrate her Best Seat Award win.

“My daughter Mallory was also competing, and my father and brother flew in, as well as a friend, so we had a good, fun group even though my other three kids couldn’t make it this time,” says Kent. “I work during the week, and Mallory goes to school, but we look forward to driving down to Florida for the shows when we can.”

The mother-daughter pair won all of their classes, with high scores. “Mallory showed in her first 2nd level test with her 15-year-old Dutch warmblood gelding Okidokie, and she not only won that class, she received a score of 70%,” Kent pointed out. And, despite feeling like she has ‘so much more’ to learn, Kent is no slouch either. Competing at 3rd level with Sir Luckas, her 14-year-old Danish warmblood gelding, she won all her classes at the Spring Challenge with scores in the upper 60s, plus a 70%. The duo train with Holly and Wolfgang Scherzer of Thistledown Farm in Wilsonville, Ala.; Kent says every time she rides, she tries to ‘gain a pearl.’

Lendon Gray Teen Protégé Wins Her Class plus Trilogy Saddles’ Best Seat Award at Gold Coast CDI

Despite her tender age of 16, Lendon Gray protégé Rachel Chowanec took home top honors at her first CDI of 2011, in front of top American and European judges; she also won the Trilogy Saddles’ Best Seat award by unanimous decision of the judges’ committee. It’s a result illustrating Trilogy’s philosophy that saddle fit and rider position are crucial in helping both horse and rider achieve their best in performance.

Chowanec’s partner in the FEI Junior Rider Individual Test, 13-year-old PRE (Pura Raza Española or Pure Spanish Horse) gelding Embrujado XI (‘Mouse’), has been her new ‘ride’ for two years, a grown-up mount to succeed the longtime dressage pony who helped Chowanec get started in Junior competition. “We were looking for a while, and one day about two years ago PRE breeder Kim Boyer called and said ‘I think I found the horse.’ That horse was Mouse, and I love him with all my heart.”

Riding with Gray since the age of 9, Chowanec’s dedication to dressage and horses has meant long hours in the saddle, receiving her schooling online, and even relying on horses to soothe her homesickness. “It’s a great experience to ride with Lendon, but it’s meant I’ve been away from home for long periods,” she says.

Sara Griot, founder and president of O’Shaughnessey Apparel, will be interviewed on the Horses in the Morning show on Horse Radio Network on Monday, January 24th, 2011.

Griot asked AHP member and equine industry writer and marketing consultant Lisa Kemp of Kemp Equine to help her with promotion prior to her upcoming American Equestrian Trade Association (AETA) appearance.

“I’m happy to be helping Sara with her marketing and PR prior to her first-ever booth at the AETA show later this month,” reported Kemp. “And I love the folks over at Horse Radio Network. It’s amazing how quickly their all-equine Internet shows have grown and multiplied, and they not only do a great job of helping my clients feel comfortable during interviews, they also make the shows fun to listen to.”

Griot contacted Kemp after reading her equine industry marketing blog, No Biz Like Horse Biz, and reading some of the ‘Others Say…’ quotes there.

Coming soon to tack stores and showrings near you, apparel company O’Shaughnessey is showcasing their distinctive hunt coats, shirts, and logowear at the 2011 American Equestrian Trade Association (AETA) show.

O’Shaughnessey showring apparel (http://oshaughnesseyapparel.com/) features the finest imported Italian and Portuguese wools and luxurious Swiss and Italian cottons, but with a twist: Their unique linings and details bring elements of individuality and style to competition clothing, despite attire restrictions in the very traditional Hunter/Jumper and Equitation worlds.

“Riders and competitors today want to be stylish and show their individuality and uniqueness, even though the rules are very strict in terms of what they can wear in the showring,” says Sara Griot, O’Shaughnessey founder and president. “No one wants to feel like they’re wearing a lackluster uniform, plus with the right details, such as beautiful stretch fabrics, unique buttons, and colorful linings and shirt fabrics, they don’t have to.”

Gabriele Celebrates 200 Years of Family Farm, Plus 25th Anniversary of Edition Boiselle

On one of the last warm days of the summer, international traveler and renowned equestrian photographer Gabriele Boiselle celebrated the 200th anniversary of Voglerhof, her family’s farm in Speyer, Germany.

Festivities began at 3 PM local time in the farm’s courtyard, but then ran well into the evening, with glittering lights and twinkling candles illuminating the celebration. Guests included Gabriele’s mother, Margaret, as well as friends from across the globe, sharing laughter along with anecdotes and stories from times past. Glasses overflowed with good wine and Champagne, and Catering Butcher Schreiner provided a menu filled with delectable goodies.

While Voglerhof is now the headquarters of Edition Boiselle, Gabriele says she remembers the days when she was growing up, when the farm was filled with animals.
