Lexington, KY – July 29, 2010 – Another clear day greeted competitors for the Kentucky Summer Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park. The day began in the Stonelea Ring with riders competing for championship and reserve championship honors beginning with the First Year Green Hunters. In the end, it was Cookie Beck an Hidden Creek’s Lennon to claim the First Year Green Under Saddle and go on to earn championship award in the division and Patricia Griffith on Platinum, owned by Lexi Maounis, took home the reserve championship ribbon.
Beck commented on her mount’s performance after claiming the top prize. “He won both (classes) yesterday and made a couple green mistakes today but still managed to jump amazing,” she said. “We bought him in February for a client (Mike Polaski) at WEF and have been showing him since March. He continues to get better and better; we saw so much potential in him. He will go to indoors next and could be a great Derby Horse in his second year.”
House Bill to Ban Hauling Horses on Double Deck Trailers
(Washington, DC) – The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) applauds Chairman James Oberstar (D-MN), of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, for bringing the Horse Transportation Safety Act (H.R. 305) before his Committee and supporting its swift unanimous passage.
“We are especially grateful for the leadership and commitment of the bill’s sponsors Congressman Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN). Both have been incredible champions for the welfare of America’s horses,” noted Christine Sequenzia, AWI federal policy advisor.
Several bipartisan cosponsors spoke in support of H.R. 305 during the hearing, including a poignant opening statement by Congressman Cohen. H.R. 305 passed by a voice vote with no amendments and is now headed to the House floor.

I got mad this morning. I mean, I was really angry. My neighbor tried to steal my breakfast, a big fat fly bit me hard on the rump, and it started getting hot really early. I was so irritated I wanted to reach out and bite someone. HARD.
Have you ever had a day like that? Why is it that we sometimes want to hurt others when we’re hurting?
It’s a natural thing. We act this way when we’re looking for a way to release the uncomfortable pent up energy we have in our bodies. Dumping it on someone else works a little, but it’s not the best way to release your negative feelings. Plus, it causes problems for someone else. That’s just not fair.
Culpeper, VA – July 28, 2010 — Two exciting weeks of horse showing will get underway at HITS Culpeper in August, beginning with the Winston National on August 18-22, followed by the Constitution Classic beginning on August 25 and running through August 29th.
To be a part of all the action in Virginia, make sure your entries are postmarked by the close of business today.
In addition to the vast array of classes offered, the Winston National also plays host to the return of the Zone III Junior Equitation Finals on Saturday, August 21.
The August shows each feature a $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Derby, $15,000 Brook Ledge Open Welcome and also a weekly $40,000 Grand Prix class which become more and more important as the qualifying opportunities for the inaugural Pfizer Million are now dwindling down to just as precious few.

The first to go in the Stonelea Ring was the Green Conformation Model where Jocelyn Martin earned the first and third place ribbons with Banderas, owned by Friday’s Farm, and Shadowplay, owned by Perry Peterson. July 29, 2010 – We keep hearing the upsetting stories from our wild horse advocates living in Nevada near the BLM wild horse holding facilities about wild horses being hauled in the middle of the night and disappearing. We hear it often.
We’ve been told by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), that’s to prevent the horses from getting overheated during the high temperatures in the hot summer months, but that doesn’t fly when we hear of it happening during the cold winter months.
When numbers from BLM reports don’t add up, and large numbers of horses are missing from the charts, all those stories of night-time hauls come to mind.
