Rolex Testimonee Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and husband Markus with their new daughter, Brianne Victoria, who was born on 27 February. Meredith will be the first rider to benefit from the new system that allows Rolex Rankings points to be frozen for Jumping riders while they are on maternity leave.

The FEI is to freeze the Rolex Rankings points for Jumping riders on maternity leave, starting with the April Rankings issued today. Under the new system, female riders will now lose only 50% of their Rolex Rankings points during their absence from competition while on maternity leave.

The new ruling means that former world number one Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum moves up from 31st on the March Rolex Rankings to 20th following the reinstatement of 50% of her points. The German rider, who gave birth to her first child Brianne Victoria Beerbaum on 27 February, has announced that she will not be defending her Rolex FEI World Cup title in Geneva next week.

“This is great news for all female Jumping riders,” Meredith said today. “It means that we can take time out from competition to have a baby and not lose all our Rolex Rankings points while we’re off the circuit. It’s a really proactive move by the FEI and as far as I know they are the first international governing body to do something like this.”

Tampa, FL – April 8, 2010 – Today at the Tampa Equestrian Festival the best junior and amateur-owner riders competed for top prizes during the High Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper class and the Low Junior/Amateur-Owner class. Shawn Casady rode First Lady to a stunning double clear victory during the High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper class, after Bryn Rose Sadler was named the winner of the Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper class with Madagascar.

Philip J De Vita designed the courses for today’s classes, which were held in the Covered Arena at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Both of the first round courses featured three difficult double combinations and a liverpool fence. For the High Junior/Amateur-Owner jump-off riders began over a single vertical and a single oxer. They then made their way through the to the vertical-to-oxer combination, where each team had the option of making a tight inside turn. Next, they made a tight turn from a single oxer to the liverpool fence and galloped home to a single, tall vertical.

April 8, 2010 – Tampa, FL – The inaugural $5,000 WCHR Handy Hunter Classic was well received and was a highlight event on April 3rd at the Tampa Bay Classic held at the Florida State Fairgrounds.  Samantha Schaefer and Bishonen, owned by Mariana Wade, led the field from start to finish winning out of a field of the top professional, emerging professional, amateur-owner, and junior hunter riders with her two round total of 171.

In her first round Schaefer finished with a score of 86 for a course that she focused on being “smooth and calm” with a goal of letting “the horse jump well,” she explained. The second round was “where we had to be handy.”  She opted to be more aggressive in her final round by skillfully negotiating two pretty tight turns.  Their second round score of 85 clinched the victory.

Samantha now has a chance to be one of the top 30 riders invited to compete in the WCHR Handy Hunter Challenge Class which will be held at the Capital Challenge Horse Show in October.  Points will be based on scores from each rider’s top four Handy Hunter results.
