March 18, 2010 – When 15-year-old Chelsea Dowdy entered one of Kentucky’s many county fairs in 2009 with El Diamante, she could feel their usual synergy. With all the fun she had, it was an easy decision to enter another. And another. By season’s end, they had not only claimed top honors and a collection of garlands and ribbons — they had amassed a respectable college fund totaling $10,799.31. That hefty chunk of change came courtesy of the Kentucky Breeders’ Incentive Fund (KBIF), earmarked for a relatively new group, the Kentucky Arabian and Half-Arabian Breeders Alliance (KAHABA).
“I would like to thank the Kentucky Breeders’ Incentive Fund for showing me how much fun the Kentucky shows really are,” said Dowdy. “I would also like to thank everyone who makes this program possible for making this a very excellent experience that I will be doing for many more years. I would recommend to anybody that is breeding in Kentucky or has an Arabian bred in Kentucky to join this great program.”

March 31, 2010 – Colonels Smokingun, better known as Gunner in the reining world, has recently been named the unofficial eighth National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Two Million Dollar Sire. He accomplished this only three years after being named a NRHA One Million Dollar Sire. This was, in part, due to the recent successes of his offspring at the 2009 NRHA Open Futurity, the 2010 NRHA European Futurity and the 2010 Cactus Reining Classic, which brought his unofficial total NRHA offspring earnings to $2,000,453. Gunner was the first American Paint Horse to achieve the NRHA million-dollar mark, and is now the first Paint to reach the two million dollar mark.
Sired by Colonelfourfreckle (AQHA son of Colonel Freckles) and out of Katie Gun (AQHA), the bald-faced stallion, which is registered with the American Paint Horse Association (APHA), has an impressive lifetime record with the association. He won back-to-back World Championship Paint Horse Show Open reining titles in both 1996 and 1997, in addition to the other reining honors he earned throughout his career with APHA.

Online Fashion Auction Benefiting Old Friends Continues with Exclusive Derby Hat Honoring Eclipse Champion Sunshine Forever
GEORGETOWN, KY – APRIL 1, 2010 – There may be less than a month before the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby, but there is still time to get an exclusive handcrafted Derby Hat.
The online fashion auction “Hats off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby” continues today with “The Sunshine Forever,” the sixth and final hat on the auction block. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY.
In November 2009, Old Friends announced this six-month-long charity auction featuring a new custom-made Derby hat every month right up to the First Saturday in May. Each hat is inspired by one of the more than 90 retirees now pensioned with Old Friends and the benefit has so far raised nearly $3,500 for the non-profit organization.
April 1, 2010 – Lexington, KY – If you are a non-profit equine organization in need of a grant then don’t delay. Go to http://www.trusthorses.org/grant/request.html and fill out a grant application from USA Equestrian Trust Grant Program. The deadline of May 4th at 5 PM EST is fast approaching.
“While no public charity can make grants to every deserving group, USA Equestrian Trust encourages any non profit in the equestrian community who needs assistance to consider completing the grant application,” commented Alan F. Balch, USAET President.
Past recipients of grants include those doing equine health research, equestrian land conservation, and educational programs.
April 2, 2010 – CHICAGO (EWA) – A peer reviewed scientific study tracing race horses sent to slaughter for human consumption has found that 100% of the horses in the study group had been administered phenylbutazone, a banned carcinogen that can also fatally damage the bone marrow of humans. The findings appear to validate the European Union’s recent tightening of traceability requirements on horse meat from third countries.
The paper, titled Association of phenylbutazone usage with horses bought for slaughter: A public health risk, appeared in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology and calls into question the reliability of the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) and CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) testing programs which have consistently failed to detect the substance.
The manuscript[1], which was authored by Drs. Nicholas Dodman[2], Nicolas Blondeau[3] and Ann M. Marini[4], followed eighteen Thoroughbred (TB) race horses that were identified by matching their registered name to their race track drug record over a five year period and were given phenylbutazone (PBZ, Bute) on race day and were subsequently sent to slaughter for human consumption.
Imagine my shock when I went over to my Solve Horseback Riding Fears Fan Page on Facebook to find out they have blocked my publishing rights!
I carefully read through all the possible violations and can’t, for the life of me, figure out what I’ve done wrong.
I know you can still see the page and you can even post stuff on it. My I have had my publishing rights removed so I can’t post any new content (tips, videos, articles etc.)
I showed the list to a couple of friends. The only thing they can figure is that the title of the page represents “Generic Concepts” and doesn’t clearly show it’s associated with a business (which is what Fan pages are supposed to be.) They suggested I change the name to: Jane Savoie-Freedom From Fear for Horseback Riders.
Wellington, FL – April 1, 2010 – This is the last week of the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) for hunters to secure a tricolor, and Sandy Ferrell and Showman, owned by Alexa & Krista Weisman, ended on a great note when they received their third championship of the twelve-week FTI WEF in the Western Hay & Suncoast Bedding First Year Green Working Hunters.
Alexa and Krista Weisman bought Showman from Scott Stewart and Ken Berkley about two years ago, and owner Alexa Weisman also competes with her mount in the Amateur Hunter divisions.
Ferrell, of Bernville, PA, competed with Showman six times throughout the 2010 FTI WEF, and has been champion three times, and reserve champion twice in the First Year Green Working Hunters. This is a very impressive feat, especially for one of the most well-attended hunter divisions at the horse show. Ferrell described the eight-year-old Westphalian gelding as the “epitome of a show hunter. He’s beautiful, elegant, talented, and he goes to win.”
