Williams Duo vs. EBW ObsessionThe American Quarter Horse Journal, March 31, 2010 – Robert Williams’ homebreds Mark It Famous and Jess So Sixy try to knock off the undefeated EBW Obsession in the $168,685 West Texas Derby (G3) Saturday afternoon at Sunland Park. The Wes Giles-trained pair of Mark It Famous (Mark My Dial-A Famous New Face by Dash Ta Fame) and Jess So Sixy (Mr Jess Perry-Oh So Sixy by Six Fortunes) boast solid Grade 1 stakes credentials. Mark It Famous has qualifications in the Texas Classic Futurity and the West Texas Futurity while Jess So Sixy was an All American Futurity and Ruidoso Futurity finalist. Mark It Famous is in sharp form after winning his only two starts this year, each at Sunland Park. He is ready to step forward in the West Texas Derby after drawing out to win his derby trial by 1 1/2 lengths in the fastest qualifying time of :18.997 for the 400 yards.
The gelding has won three of his four starts at Sunland Park with his only setback a close third-place finish in the West Texas Futurity (G1). Jess So Sixy returned from a six-month layoff in her West Texas Derby trial to finish a close second behind third-fastest qualifier Stoneys Dash (SC Chiseled In Stone-Fancy Bege Charger by Dash For Perks), who was timed in :18.959. Jess So Sixy was clocked in the fourth-fastest time of :18.973. During her strong juvenile campaign, she won her Ruidoso Futurity trial and All American Futurity trial, qualifying for the finals of each Grade 1 futurity. Ernie and Brenda Wood’s homebred EBW Obsession (Brimmerton-Runaway Sweetheart by Runaway Winner) was one of the most highly regarded members of the Ruidoso Downs juvenile division last year for trainer Jamie Zamora. The filly won each of her four starts, capped by her win in the Ford New Mexico Juvenile Challenge (G3) and one-length win in her All American Futurity trial. Now trained by Ralph Muniz, EBW Obsession returned seven months after her All American trial win with a 1½-length West Texas Derby trial victory. She won with the fifth-fastest qualifying time of :19.000 as the 9-10 favorite. She has been favored in each of her five starts and has been the odds-on favorite in her latest four starts.
