Wellington, FL (March 18, 2010) – World-renowned trainer and clinician Monty Roberts is returning to West Palm Beach, Florida to host a clinic March 26th at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center. Monty Roberts is known the “Man Who Listens to Horses,” an award-winning trainer of championship horses, best-selling author, and creator of the revolutionary equine training technique, Join-Up.
Roberts has won countless awards and received worldwide press coverage. He is the author of three books on the New York Times best-seller list. He trained horses for Queen Elizabeth’s equestrian team and been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich.
Wellington Classic Dressage, Inc., which hosts horse shows and events for the equestrian community, organized the Monty Roberts clinic after the famed clinician was featured at the USET Holiday Fund Raiser last December held in conjunction with the Wellington Classic Dressage Holiday Horse Show. “It is definitely a case of back by popular demand,” said Wellington Classic Dressage Sponsorship and Events Director, John Flanagan. “When Monty was here in December, people just kept coming up and asking us when we could have him back.” So Flanagan went to work to schedule the March Monty Roberts event. “He has universal appeal across the disciplines,” Flanagan stated. “Monty’s proven training methods have helped show horses, race horses, and riding horses of all disciplines.”
Mild sunny weather welcomed the return of enthusiastic crowds to Prestbury Park with the promise of 4 days of top quality National Hunt racing and the pinnacle of the racing year – the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday.
The first day of the Cheltenham festival hit punters pockets hard with surprise results when 5 favourites failed to win. Champion jockey Tony McCoy’s joy was evident when winning the feature race, the Champion Hurdle, on Binocular. Up until last week it was unclear if the Nicky Henderson trained gelding would run because of recent injury. This French bred six year old, who finished 3rd in 2009, was always travelling sweetly and took command between the last two hurdles to win comfortably giving his popular Irish owner, J. P. McManus, his 22nd festival success.
But much of the festival focus remains on Friday’s eagerly anticipated Gold Cup which will see a clash for the 3rd time of super equine heroes, Kauto Star and Denman. The Paul Nicholls trained duo have captured the hearts of the nation and Kauto Star’s bid to win this three and a quarter mile chase would secure a place in the history books with former champions Arkle, Best Mate, Golden Miller and Cottage Rake.
Wellington, FL – March 17, 2010 – The ninth annual Challenge of the Americas competition and Gala were held this past Saturday night, March 13, at International Polo Club Palm Beach. Held as a benefit for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the event raised approximately $200,000 in support of finding a cure for a disease that has affected so many lives.
Following Team International The Seley Parker Group Merrill Lynch’s quadrille victory, the Challenge Gala got underway with an evening of dinner and dancing. This year’s gala, a sold-out affair, was held in the beautiful Grand Marque tent at International Polo Club Palm Beach and featured a sit-down dinner, live auction and dancing. Top riders, trainers and judges of the dressage world attended the Gala, along with generous sponsors and supporters.
Held as a benefit for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for the last nine years, the Challenge of the Americas has raised over $1.2 million since its inception in 2002. This year they will once again add a generous donation to that total.
Wellington, FL – March 17, 2010 – Pony Lane Farm continues to excel during the 2010 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), competing for the ninth consecutive week in Wellington, FL. Based out of Bluffdale, UT, and Wellington, FL, Pony Lane Farm is home to sisters Kelsey and Madeline Thatcher, who both train with Maggie Jayne of Our Day Farm in Elgin, IL. Competing this week, Kelsey Thatcher rode Pony Lane Farm’s Bella Blue to the championship tricolor in the Small Junior Hunter 16-17 division and piloted Esquilino Bay to a second place finish in the $10,000 SJHOF High Junior Jumper Classic.
Kelsey Thatcher has had an excellent circuit at WEF this year and continued her winter with more victories this week, despite riding with a broken wrist. Thatcher rode her gray mare Bella Blue to the Small Junior Hunter 16-17 championship on Saturday, placing first, first and fourth over fences and second under saddle. The pair’s winning scores over fences were 84 and 90, with the 90 coming in the challenging handy course. All classes were cancelled on Friday because of torrential rains, so the horses and riders had to jump three times on Saturday, but Bella Blue handled herself beautifully.

OCALA, FL (March 16, 2010) — The HITS Ocala Winter Circuit celebrated its fifth consecutive week of AA-rated competition as Sharn Wordley and Andiamo Pyon, owned by Swept Away Farm, captured the win in Sunday’s $50,000 Purina Mills Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health.
“I don’t know what I did – I just kept kicking!” exclaimed Wordley, who was ecstatic with his victory. “He [Andiamo Pyon] went very fast today and I was surprised, because he normally doesn’t go that fast.”
Originally from New Zealand, Wordley now lives in Ocala, Florida, and has been riding 12-year-old Andiamo Pyon for just over a year. He rode on the New Zealand Olympic Team in 2008 alongside Sunday’s third place winner, Kirk Webby.
“I thought it was a nice galloping course,” Wordley said. “There were a lot of challenging questions out there and I was surprised there was a good amount of us who went clean in the first round.”
Carson City, Nevada – March 16, 2010 – The Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby and the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation (Parasol) will work in collaboration so as to benefit the Northern Nevada and California area. The standalone derby is set to take place at the Franktown Meadows Equestrian Facility in Carson City, NV on September 19, 2010, and will be a member event of the Chronicle of the Horse/United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) International Hunter Derby Series presented by Dietrich Insurance.
Parasol has partnered with the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby not only to promote philanthropy in the Northern Nevada and California areas, but also to promote the equestrian sport.
The Foundation is housed in the $6.6 million Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center of Incline Village, NV. This beautifully planned purpose-built building provides a place for non-profit organizations to come together for the common good. Sixty-six non-profit and charitable organizations work together under the Parasol roof sharing meeting space, services, resources and ideas, in addition to the eight charitable organizations housed in the Parasol building. This building embodies the concept of collaborating to save money – the Parasol building has saved non-profits over $4.1 million.
The American Quarter Horse Journal, March 18, 2010 – The inaugural class of AQHA’s Stewards went through a comprehensive training program today in Dallas, Texas. Beginning in April, the 39 people attending the training session will begin stewarding some of AQHA’s more than 3,200 annual shows and special events.
“This is truly an historical and important launch for AQHA,” said Ward Stutz, senior director of breed integrity and animal welfare. “We are dedicated to making this program successful, and this first round of stewards is key to that success. We know we have the right people and will look forward to welcoming more stewards later this year.”
Funds for the stewards program were made possible through an increase in show processing fees that became effective in 2010. To help level the playing field for exhibitors and ensure the welfare of horses in competition, a portion of those funds have been designated for breed integrity initiatives like the stewards program.
Kelly O’Shea Duncan and her Hackney Horse, Baryshnikov, won the Intermediaire I Freestyle at the Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge II, held at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center.
West Palm Beach, FL (March 18, 2010) – Kelly O’Shea Duncan and her Hackney Horse, Baryshnikov, won the Intermediaire I Freestyle class at the Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge II, proving that Hackney Horses can excel in the dressage world. Sponsored by Classic Equine Equipment, a nationally recognized leader in quality horse stall systems and stable accessories, O’Shea Duncan won a polar fleece vest from Classic Equine.
O’Shea bought Baryshnikov four-and-a-half years ago out of a field, and the Hackney Horse was untrained and unbroken. Elizabeth Goth bred Baryshnikov in hopes that he would become part of her four-in-hand driving team, but his markings didn’t match the rest of the team.
Baryshnikov’s incorrect markings turned out to be a blessing in disguise for O’Shea Duncan. “He has always been in the national rankings in the open division in the USDF and the USEF,” O’Shea Duncan said. “He’s doing the high performance and I’m hoping to go to Gladstone with him.”
