West Palm Beach, FL (March 11, 2010) – Tina Konyot proved just how special her Danish Warmblood stallion Calecto V was during the 2010 Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI, riding away the winner of the Grand Prix Special. Konyot’s class was sponsored by Classic Equine Equipment, a nationally recognized leader in quality horse stall systems and stable accessories, and their South Florida distributors, Idlewild Furnishing.

“Tina and Calecto turned in a beautiful ride,” said Adam Busse, owner of Classic Equine, who along with John Grimes, owner of Idlewild Furnishing, presented Tina with a teak braiding stool for her win. “It is always great to see a friend win. I could not be happier for Tina and her successful ride. The Palm Beach Dressage Derby is a fantastic show, and Tina and Calecto certainly raised the performance bar.” Grimes added.

It was Calecto’s third time to compete in the Grand Prix Special, and the stallion, by Comeback II, earned a score of 71.958%. The winning score was the highest non-freestyle score to date for the 12-year-old stallion.

Konyot suffered a back injury prior to the Derby, but followed the old adage that the “show must go on” and competed, although in pain. Despite her bad back, Konyot was pleased with her stallion and gave much of the credit for the pair’s advancing success to trainer Lars Petersen.

State and Federal Agencies Work Together to Prevent Introduction of Destructive Snail

Thursday, March 11th, 2010 | Contributors - Press, Environment, FDACS | Comments

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have joined together in a cooperative effort to prevent giant African snails (GAS) from making their way into Florida and are asking the public for help.

Giant African snails are considered a serious plant pest and potential threat to public health because of their ability to destroy plants, damage ornamental plants and spread disease.  Giant African snails are illegal to import into the United States without a permit, and currently no permits have been issued.

Because of vigilant federal and state inspections and public education efforts, Florida has been successful in keeping these dangerous mollusks from becoming established again in Florida.  Once established, this pest can create a giant swath of destruction and an alert public can prevent that from happening.

Rolex Grand Slam, Oliver Townend

OliverTownend9

(11.3.10) Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing contender, Oliver Townend, has confirmed that he plans to ride Ashdale Cruise Master at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, as well as possibly ODT Master Rose.

Ashdale Cruise Master completed the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials last year with Emily Gilruth, and when she became pregnant the owners, Henry and Edna Harding, moved him to Townend’s Shropshire yard. “He’s a very classy horse, with lots and lots of scope,” said Townend. “My biggest problem is it’s a race against time on the dressage front, but he’s definitely one of the best horses I’ve ridden.”

Townend’s result at Burghley has set up a thrilling competition in Lexington, Kentucky in April, when he could become only the second rider, after Pippa Funnell, to scoop the $350,000 Rolex Grand Slam for winning the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, and the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, all in succession. So far the Rolex Grand Slam feat has only been achieved by Pippa Funnell, who won all three competitions in 2003 on two different horses. The 2010 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event is from 22-25 April.

Colombian dressage rider Marco Bernal heard his national anthem played three times at the 2010 Palm Beach Dressage Derby, thanks to three wins aboard his Westphalian stallion Farewell IV.

West Palm Beach, FL (March 10, 2010)  – Colombian dressage rider Marco Bernal lived every rider’s dream during the 2010 Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI, when he heard his country’s national anthem played three times for three great wins. Bernal’s success came aboard his Westphalian stallion Farewell IV, the same stallion that he set the world record on at WEF in 2005 when they scored a record high score of 85.385%.

“This was the best show for me so far. It is nice when you work so long with a horse and you have great results,” Bernal said. “It was also a great feeling to hear my national anthem played three times in a row. I have had Farewell for almost five years and he improves every day. It is really nice to see that improvement.”

Farewell IV and Bernal won the FEI Prix St. Georges class with a score of 70.263%, the FEI Intermediaire I class with a 71.228% and the FEI Intermediaire I Freestyle with a score of 69.600%. Bernal also competed Halbgott and Maybach at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby, and was pleased with both stallions. In addition, Maybach won the Best Conditioned Horse at the CDI jog at the show.

“All of my horses were very consistent and as a trainer that makes me feel great. Each time I ride into the ring my horses are getting better and better,” Bernal said. “I was very pleased with how all three stallions performed.”
