Women’s Horse Industry Association Member Spotlights – March 5, 2010

Hi Everyone:

We get a lot of very cool new members. Here’s some WOMEN YOU SHOULD KNOW IN THE HORSE INDUSTRY. Please check them out!

JENNIFER WILLIAMS
I’ve loved horses for a long time, starting with riding lessons when I was about 11.  I got my first horse a year later.  She was my great uncle’s old farm horse.  She put up with all kinds of foolishness from me – and was my best friend for the two years I had her.  Since then, I’ve ridden western pleasure, English pleasure (saddleseat), hunter pleasure, dressage and sidesaddle.  I currently have a reining prospect, a hunter pleasure horse, a country English pleasure prospect and two retired horses – all Arabians or half-Arabians. I got involved in rescue in 1998 and founded Lone Star Equine Rescue in the fall of ’98. I ran Lone Star until 2005 when I and several others formed Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society.  We work with law enforcement officers throughout Texas and Arkansas to investigate reports of neglect and abuse, educate owners when possible and remove horses when necessary. I am a Certified Humane Investigator (through Code 3 Associations and the Law Enforcement Training Institute) and have a Masters and PhD in Animal Science from Texas A&M (emphasis on equine behavior, learning and welfare).  I am also president of the American Sidesaddle Association and a writer.  I have published in EQUUS, AQHA Journal, Young Rider, Chronicle of the Horse and others.  My first book, How to Start and Run a Rescue, was published a few years ago and my second book is currently with the publisher. Find Jennifer under Non-Profits in our member directory.

TRACI BENOIT
Traci has been actively involved in the horse industry for more than 25 years. From the age of 12 she has been competitive in barrel racing and pole bending. She enjoys working with problem horses, bringing them around to be competitive again and turning them into winners. Traci started out a decade ago as a freelance writer of magazine articles and articles for the Internet. She then moved on to study internet marketing and copywriting, which involves creating sales copy for ads, websites, business emails, sales letters and direct mail. Using Internet marketing as a sole marketing platform or using it in addition to an offline marketing plan can boost your business without breaking the budget. Internet marketing is an affordable and exciting way to reach new and current customers. From building trust with your customers through an ongoing email series to connecting with your target market through social networking, Traci can create a campaign that is right for your business. You can find Traci under internet marketing.

CHERYL GIBSON
Gibson comes from many generations of horsemen.  Her passion for helping horses has led to research and development of a variety of methods of bodywork over the last 30+ years. Realizing many years ago that she was unable to ‘rescue’ unlimited numbers of horses and having the strong philosophy of empowering others through education, she started Cedar Lane Farm and the Canadian College of Equine Studies. By educating horse owners, she is better able to help all horses. Cheryl, and her teaching partner, Simone Usselman-Tod formed Equi-Bow Canada as a vehicle within which to teach an integrated equine body-balancing technique in Canada as well as internationally. The Equi-Bow equine technique initially developed from an interest in bowen for humans. However, due to the broadly based experiences of its founders, it quickly evolved into a different type of holistic technique uniquely suited to horses. With over 30 years experience in the equine & human complementary fields, they encompassed other disciplines & philosophies such as CranioSacral, acupuncture, Feldenkrais, myofascial release, massage, stress point and soft tissue release modalities, anatomy, tack fitting, balanced hoof and behaviour modification among others. The thoroughness of training, attention to detail, quality of education and student support ensures the highest quality of equine practitioner training. As a division of Cedar Lane Farm’s educational programs, Equi-Bow has quickly become known as a highly successful tool for both horse owners and professionals. Situated on a beautiful horse farm in Southern Ontario, Canada (45 minutes from Toronto Pearson International and 20 minutes from Hamilton International Airport) Cedar Lane Farm has offered a wide variety of courses over the last 25 years.  We invite you to join us for innovative, unique experiences in the field of equine and animal well being.  Our programs honor the horses who are our greatest teachers. You can find Cheryl under Health in our member directory.
