Mount Up
Once the horse has softened and accepted the lessons from Part 1, he’s ready for me to prepare him to carry a rider. Remember to stay soft and quiet as you get on. I’ll slowly introduce my weight in the stirrup and just let him get used to the feel before I proceed. (See the photo gallery.) I’m also ready to step back down, draw his head toward me and move his hindquarters away from me to prevent him from pulling away or kicking me. After he accepts my weight in one stirrup, I lean over and rub him on the shoulder and hip on the right side. I might also move the fender of the offside stirrup a little to get him used to the movement. When he’s handling this well, I step into the saddle, remembering to stay soft and quiet.
Once I’m there, I don’t worry about trying to guide him much. I’ll let him adjust to the extra weight. I have a Cheyenne roll on the back of my saddle, and I’ll hold on to that in case he bucks. They almost never do if they are prepared up to this point.

Wellington, FL – March 3, 2010 – Today’s schedule at the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival featured show jumping at two facilities of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The USEF World Equestrian Games (WEG) Show Jumping Trial #3 was held at The Stadium, while the CSIO competition opened up on the main show grounds in the International Arena. In Trial 3, McLain Ward of Brewster, NY, and Rothchild, owned by Sagamore Farms, came home with the win over Rich Fellers of Wilsonville, OR, and Flexible, owned by Harry and Molly Chapman. Third went to Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, NY, and Abigail Wexner’s Danny Boy.
For the current standings in the USEF WEG Trials, Richard Spooner of Agua Dulce, CA is leading the way with six faults on Cristallo, owned by Show Jumping Syndicate. Tied for second with eight faults are Nicole Shahinian-Simpson of Thousand Oaks, CA, on Ilan Ferder’s Tristand and Candice King of Wellington, FL, on Skara Glen’s Davos, owned by Skara Glen Stables. Wellington, FL – March 4, 2010 – Young hunters were showcased over the past two days at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. All divisions of the Pre-Green Hunters are generously sponsored by Equisport Agency Inc., and Erynn Ballard rode Victoria Daniel’s Sincere to the championship in the Pre-Green 3’3″ Hunter division today. The reserve championship was awarded to Molly Sewell and Raise the Bar, owned by Lisa Hunt.
Ballard has had the ride on Sincere, an eight-year-old Swedish Warmblood, since September, when owner Victoria Daniel purchased him. Although Ballard has ridden Sincere since the fall, she did not show him until they arrived in Wellington for the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, where the duo has experienced much success. “He’s a dream horse. He’s the sweetest horse in the world, has a great expression, and really loves his job. It’s nice to ride a horse like that,” Ballard commented.
Ballard and Sincere dominated the Pre-Green 3’3″ Hunters this week, placing first, first, and second over fences, as well as winning the under saddle. Ballard described her mount and said, “He’s eight years old, which makes it nice. It’s not like riding a five-year-old. He’s game to be competitive.”
“It has been a hard winter with the wind and the cold. He got a little green with the flowers, but we gave him last week off, and he’s taken in all the information and everything we’ve taught him. He was really on his game this week,” Ballard continued.
Sincere also currently competes in the Amateur-Owner 3’3″ Hunters with owner Victoria Daniel. After returning to their home base of Toronto upon the completion of the FTI WEF, Sincere will step up to the 3’6″ divisions and compete in the First Year Green Hunters as well as the Amateur-Owner Hunters. “I didn’t think he should do the First Years here because he had no experience. We wanted to take advantage of the 3’3″ divisions here. In Toronto he’ll move up to the First Years,” Ballard explained.
Ballard will continue to show Sincere for the duration of the FTI WEF, and then will return home to Toronto to compete on the circuit there. Her goal for Sincere is to qualify for the prestigious Royal Winter Fair in both the First Year Green Hunters and the Amateur-Owner Hunters.
More hunter competition will continue tomorrow with Amateur and Junior Hunter competition.

Your support of IDA’s Project Hope Sanctuary made this possible
On April 10, 2009, IDA’s Project Hope Sanctuary in Mississippi received an urgent plea from the Yalobusha County Sheriff’s Department. The department needed immediate shelter for 4 horses they were seizing at that moment.
Three of the horses were severely emaciated. When deputies questioned the horses’ “owner” – he certainly was not a “guardian” by any stretch of the word – the deputies learned that the 4th horse was in better condition only because he was purchased only 2 weeks prior to the seizure. While his three horses were starving, he bought a new horse to ride. He claimed he was caring well for the horses by mowing his property to feed them.
Wellington, FL – March 4, 2010, 2010 – Jaime Azcarraga (MEX) aboard his own Presley Boy produced a blazing time to win the $30,000 WEF Challenge Cup Round Eight, CSIO. Second place honors went to Nick Skelton (GBR) on his mount Carlo 273, owned by Beverly Widdowson. The third place award went to Keean White (CAN) on Celena Z, owned by Angelstone Farms & The Ashland Group.
The eighth week of the FTI WEF is sponsored by CN and runs through Sunday, March 7, 2010. The 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival has 12 weeks of competition that conclude on April 4, 2010, and they will be awarding almost $6 million in prize money through the circuit.
Anthony D’Ambrosio of Red Hook, NY designed the course in the International Arena with 13 numbered obstacles in the first round, which included a careful vertical to a water jump, a double of verticals, and a two stride as one of the last elements of the course. The time allowed in the first round was 86 seconds. A total of 36 competitors came out to compete from 16 different countries, but only eight managed to pass the first round test and went on to the short course.

Wellington, FL (March 4, 2010) – A six-year-old hunter prospect named Noblige, owned by Ole Strigel’s DK-USA Sporthorse farm in Durham, North Carolina, proved he has what it takes to be a successful hunter when he won the Baby Green Hunter Championship during the seventh week of the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. Draper Equine Therapy, makers of therapeutic products for horses and riders, sponsors the Baby Green Division.
Noblige, known as Ziggy, was the Reserve Champion of the Baby Green division during week six, but came back his second time out this year to win the championship. The young gelding, who was ridden by trainer Denise Monopoli, is a 16.1 hand Dutch Warmblood by Quite Easy.
“Congratulations to Ole, Denise and Ziggy,” said Kat Wojtylak, Product Manager of Draper Equine Therapy. “He is a beautiful gelding and is having great success at WEF this year. The competition at WEF is the toughest in the country, so I am sure we will be hearing plenty about this dynamite horse in the near future.”

JENNIFER WILLIAMS
I’ve loved horses for a long time, starting with riding lessons when I was about 11. I got my first horse a year later. She was my great uncle’s old farm horse. She put up with all kinds of foolishness from me – and was my best friend for the two years I had her. Since then, I’ve ridden western pleasure, English pleasure (saddleseat), hunter pleasure, dressage and sidesaddle. I currently have a reining prospect, a hunter pleasure horse, a country English pleasure prospect and two retired horses – all Arabians or half-Arabians. I got involved in rescue in 1998 and founded Lone Star Equine Rescue in the fall of ’98. I ran Lone Star until 2005 when I and several others formed Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society. We work with law enforcement officers throughout Texas and Arkansas to investigate reports of neglect and abuse, educate owners when possible and remove horses when necessary. I am a Certified Humane Investigator (through Code 3 Associations and the Law Enforcement Training Institute) and have a Masters and PhD in Animal Science from Texas A&M (emphasis on equine behavior, learning and welfare). I am also president of the American Sidesaddle Association and a writer. I have published in EQUUS, AQHA Journal, Young Rider, Chronicle of the Horse and others. My first book, How to Start and Run a Rescue, was published a few years ago and my second book is currently with the publisher. Find Jennifer under Non-Profits in our member directory.

Ocala, FL (March 3, 2010) – Chester Weber kicked off his 2010 show season exactly the way a national champion likes to – by winning the horse team class at the Sunshine State FEI Combined Driving Event at the Florida Horse Park. Weber, the seven-time US National Four-In-Hand Champion, competed against an international field and ended the three-phase competition 24 points ahead of second place finisher James Fairclough.
In the dressage phase of the Sunshine State competition, Weber’s four-in-hand team consisted of Grumus, Rolex W, Boy W and Para. “This is the team I hope to compete with at the World Equestrian Games and it was the team that I set a world record with in Riesenbeck in 2008,” Weber said. “I had my top group together at this competition and I am pleased with the results.”
Weber added a new horse to his team in the cross-country marathon and cones phase, a 15-year-old French trotter named Horus du Bois. Weber purchased Horus last summer from Dutch driver Hans Heus, in hopes of adding high-end speed and drivability to the marathon and cones.
“Horus was in the lead and was like a cat. He did add significant speed to the marathon,” Weber said. “I am excited about this new addition to Team Weber. Heus used him to lead his way onto the squad for the World Championships in Beesd, and Horus is certainly a clever horse. At Sunshine State he joined teammates Boy W, Rolex W and Para for marathon and cones.”
