Canadian Hawley Bennett makes a return to the show this week to tell us about being an Olympic Torchbearer and her plans for the season. Plus we hear from Shelley Lambert who is managing the new Academy of Classical Eventing in South Carolina. Listen in…
Eventing Radio Episode 64 – Shelley Lambert and Hawley Bennett:
Gulfport, MS — February 18, 2010 — Winter Circuits have long been known as a word of mouth market place for selling or buying new ponies and horses. Classic Company is debuting a simple aid to help both parties, affectionately dubbed “Red Dot Specials”, at the Gulf Coast Winter Classics.
Typically at winter shows nationwide those trying to sell a horse or pony rely on spreading the word via conversations or small flyers posted around barns and public places like food stands which may or may not attract attention. The new Red Dot program is an effort to expand sellers’ options to reach potential buyers at no out of pocket expense. Bob Bell, President of the Classic Company, explained the concept. “If a horse or pony is for sale then the owner or trainer can, at their discretion, get a red dot from the horse show office to be put on the right hand corner of the entry’s back number to signify the mount is available.”
Additionally the show staff will include a memo on each judge’s clipboard explaining the purpose of the red dots on the back numbers; a similar memo is posted on each course board for trainers and riders to be aware of why they’re “seeing red dots” on their fellow competitors. One more bonus for red dot participants is having the morning announcements to include a reminder and explanation of the program. WELLINGTON, FL – February 18, 2010 – Just a week away on Friday, February 26, 2010, the Fete Cheval will bring out the “kid” in all the guests who enter the Marquee “Big Top” Tent at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida. Featuring a carnival-theme dinner, complete with cotton candy and other “carnival” accoutrements, the event, presented by Spy Coast Farm, and benefitting The EQUUS Foundation, is great for kids to attend too.
During the reception and casual dinner, guests can test their strength on the Hi-Striker, or their agility with the Frog Pond, Wiggle Wire, Cat Rack, and Boulder Roll – all official carnival games provided by Metropolis Entertainment (http://www.metropolispro.com).
But that’s not all – the highlight of the evening will be watching some of the world’s top riders and trainers demonstrate not only their unique equestrian talent but also great sportsmanship in gymkhana games ringside on the polo field. Hillary Dobbs, Kent Farrington, Sandy Ferrell, Brianne Goutal, Patricia Griffith, Todd Minikus, Bert Mutch, Rodrigo Pessoa, Peter Pletcher, Havens Schatt, Louise Serio, Shane Sweetnam, Jimmy Torano, and McLain Ward will battle it out in Musical Stalls, the Power and Speed Relay, and a Surprise Ride-Off judged by Ralph Caristo and Susie Schoellkopf. Rated Season Kicks Off in Ocala with Strong Numbers, Great Competition and Good Times
OCALA, FL (February 18, 2010) — HITS Post Time Farm wrapped up a strong week of AA-rated show jumping this past Sunday, as the show grounds were buzzing with action for the opening week of the season.
The big news for the rated circuit is that HITS Ocala will host a total of 12 qualifiers for the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix that will take place on September 12 in Saugerties, New York. The first Grand Prix win of the AA-rated season went to 2009 HITS Ocala Champions Laura Linback and As Di Villagana. The duo won the big finale last March the $100,000 DeLuca Toyota Grand Prix, presented by Great American Insurance Group. In Thursday’s $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, they beat out 23 pairs to take the blue.
“We are very happy to be back in Ocala jumping outdoors after being inside for the past several months in Chicago,” said Linback, of Mundelien, Illinois. “It was nice to get a win on the first real go of the season.”
Dear Friends,
Recently, I was invited to a meeting with the Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, to discuss my Foundation’s plan to create a sanctuary for thousands of our wild horses in Nevada or another western State. The Secretary was very gracious with his time, and I felt that the meeting was very productive. The Secretary indicated that he recognized that there is a serious problem with the excess wild horses that now stand in holding pens all across America and the additional thousands of wild horses being gathered this year. This is the first time in many years that a Secretary of the Interior has reached out to the private sector and acknowledged that there is a problem, and I commend Secretary Salazar for his initiative in trying to reconcile the many different proposals to resolve this issue.
I explained to the Secretary that it was wrong to continue to gather these wild horses, particularly in light of the fact that we have not addressed the issue of where to put them and also advised him that long term holding was not a good option. I emphasized the fact that these wild horses should remain in their natural environment and be presented to the American people in the setting where they have lived for hundreds if not thousands of years.
February 14, 2010 – Lake Worth, FL – The atmosphere at the fourth annual Bowling for Equestrians was electrifying. From the thunder of the bowling balls as they sped down the alleys to the misty fog that made the psychedelic lighting system sparkle. The game room was showered with kids testing their skills while young and old alike threw bowling balls down the alleys in hopes of a spare or strike.
The fundraiser, which is the brainchild of the American Hunter-Jumper Foundation, was held at Greenacres Bowl in Lake Worth, FL, on Saturday evening, February 14th for the benefit of the AHJF’s Emergency Relief Fund (ERF), a cause which helps horse(wo)men in need.
Dressage rider Ashley Holzer; hunter riders and trainers Louise Serio, Geoff Teall, Peter Pletcher and Danny Arendt (AHJF South Central Regional Chairman); jumper rider Christian Currey; veterinarians Steve and Jeanette Sewell (Palm Beach Equine) and Kit and Susan Miller (Miller and Associates); announcers Oliver Kennedy (who created an atmosphere of excitement around the raffle), Brian Lookabill (anthem singer for the upcoming AHJF Hunter Classic on February 20th) and Gerry Briggs (a former recipient of the ERF to help offset the medical bills of a heart attack); course designer Michael Rheinheimer, Michele Powers (former owner of Dover Saddlery) and many more veterans were among those you could hear chatting and cheering for groups, barns and individuals. The up-and-coming to seasoned veterans ate, drank, tossed bowling balls, enjoyed catch-up conversations, shared jokes, won raffle prizes, played video games and more to a backdrop of rock and roll music, all for a worthy cause.
Pan Am Gold medalist Lauren Sammis, left, won the FEI Test of Choice aboard High Field’s Casimirov, owned by Paula Runnells, at the Wellington Classic Dressage Spring Challenge CDI at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center.
West Palm Beach, FL (February 17, 2010) – Pam Am Gold Medalist Lauren Sammis piloted High Field’s Casimirov, a 14-year-old Westphalian owned by Paula Runnells, into the winner’s circle during the Wellington Classic Dressage Spring Challenge CDI. Sammis and Casimirov won the FEI Test of Choice, sponsored by The Sanctuary Equine Sports Therapy & Rehabilitation Center in Ocala, and were awarded a $250 gift certificate to the world-class center.
“I have been riding Casimirov for about six months and this is just the beginning of my experience with him in the show ring,” Sammis said. “He is just coming into himself. At this show he earned a 69.035 and in his extensions he scored 9s. He has a beautiful presence, it is just the beginning for him.”
Runnels, who is from New Jersey, said she bought Casimirov in Germany. “He a loving horse, very casual and easy,” she added.
So many riders find it hard to keep their seat and pelvis in the correct position on their horse. Your own conformation and the conformation of your saddle plays a huge role in allowing your seat to be in the correct position.
Your Seat and Your Saddle
Do you find it hard to keep your seat and pelvis in the correct position on your horse? Your own conformation and the conformation of your saddle play a huge role in allowing your seat to be in the correct position.
Take a look at the conformation of your saddle. Even if your saddle fits your horse, it doesn’t mean it fits you. Make sure that your saddle allows you to find a neutral pelvic position.
