February 6, 2010 – Georgetown, Kentucky – The Georgetown Equine Expo, presented by the Kentucky International Equine Expo, LLC has announced two major events for the expo. The expo will take place September 24, 2010 to October 10, 2010 and will offer attendees a variety of things to do.
In addition to the equine exhibitors offering products and services and numerous equine related seminars, the expo will now include Mustang Mania and the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
Mustang Mania will feature juried artists from the Bluegrass Region who will create eleven, one of a kind, life size fiberglass horses. Once completed these gorgeous collector Mustangs will be displayed around Georgetown, Kentucky throughout the summer of 2010. One of the mustangs will be a “Mystery Mustang” to be painted by a “Mystery Artist of World Wide Notoriety”. Then on September 15, 2010 the Mustangs will be gathered up and put at the Georgetown Equine Expo to be auctioned off to the highest bidder at the Auction and Gala Friday evening October 9, 2010. One hundred percent of the net proceeds of the auction will benefit the Scott County Council of the Arts, which supports 11 different art groups. Sponsorships are now open. Sponsorships include the horse, base and artist honorarium. Artists wishing to be considered should visit our website at www.KIEExpo.com/mustangmania2010.

CHICAGO, (EWA) – The Chicago based Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA) released a study of horse slaughter trends analyzing data from 2006 through October, 2009. The study documents and analyzes monthly horse slaughter totals as reported by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Canadian horse meat exports as reported by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
The findings refute the “facts” horse slaughter proponents have been circulating on the impact on the horse industry since the plants closed by showing that the closings had no impact on slaughter totals.

Wellington, FL – February 7, 2010 – After three major second place finishes in the first three weeks of the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, Nick Skelton (GBR) and Carlo 273, owned by Beverly Widdowson, stepped up into the winner’s circle in the $75,000 Adequan Grand Prix, CSI 2*. They caught the win over Pablo Barrios (VEN) and G&C Quick Star 11, owned by Gustavo and Carolina Mirabal, and Beezie Madden (USA) on Abigail Wexner’s Danny Boy.
Today’s class concluded competition for the fourth week of the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), and the week four title sponsor is Adequan. The 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival has 12 weeks of competition that conclude on April 4, 2010, and the circuit will be awarding almost $6 million in prize money through the circuit.
Michel Vaillancourt (CAN) was the course designer for today’s grand prix, which featured 14 numbered obstacles and 17 fences altogether that included the open water and a triple combination. There were 35 entries, and five of them found the clear round to move on to the jump-off. “I thought it was fair, some difficult lines,” Skelton said. Barrios added, “To me, it was a pretty careful course to ride, but I liked it for my horse. I felt pretty confident when I walked the course. I felt like we could go clear.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=10159

FEI President HRH Princess Haya, UN Messenger of Peace and Chairperson of International Humanitarian City (IHC), a global humanitarian and aid hub in Dubai, travelled to Port-au-Prince on 22 January 2010 to oversee a delivery of 90 metric tonnes of relief supplies for the Haitians, meet with Haitian and UN officials and raise awareness of the need for international aid.
The shipment was organised by the International Humanitarian City at the request of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and included 40 metric tonnes of canned food and high-energy biscuits, and another 50 metric tonnes of hospital tents, water sanitation equipment, prefabricated offices, and computer and telecommunications equipment.
In addition to WFP’s cargo, the plane carried emergency supplies from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment.
Contributions are also being made by the National Federations. The Irish Jumping Team, consisting of Cameron Hanley, Dermott Lennon, Cian O’Connor and Billy Twomey, have donated EUR 4,000, their prize money from the Nations Cup held in Abu Dhabi on 5 February, to the humanitarian agency GOAL Ireland to aid the relief effort in Haiti.
The FEI appreciates all contributions and will report back on the use made of the funds.
Eagle Wild Horses Safe for Now
BLM cancels winter roundup – keep up the pressure!
Dear Supporters,
The spotlight you are shining on the inhumane, unnecessary and costly roundups along with your calls and letters are making a difference. BLM abruptly put on hold the planned Eagle Roundup of 595 more Nevada mustangs (more details here). This is the second roundup this year that has been delayed because of the growing pressure and oversight on the mismanagement of our wild horses and burros – keep it up!
We need a moratorium on all roundups – take a moment to send a letter to President Obama, your Senators and Congressperson with one easy form and sample letter.
Thank you to all for your dedication to the protection and preservation of our wild herds — you are making a difference.
