Calico Roundup Over – Broken Horses, Broken Promises

CalicoP1090391

Dear Friends of Cloud,
The Bureau of Land Management has pulled the plug on the massive roundup of wild horses in the Calico Complex. This remote and starkly beautiful area in northwestern Nevada was home to one of the largest wild, free-roaming herds of wild horses in the United States. 39 horses are reported dead as a result of the winter roundup. This does not include the 25-30 mares that have aborted their late term foals in the feedlot style facility outside Fallon, Nevada. The death toll is expected to rise as BLM begins preparing and processing the horses next week (freeze-branding, gelding of stallions, etc.). However, the public may not know what happens from here on out, as BLM has decided not to provide veterinary reports on the cause of death in the new Fallon facility.

Despite a public statement by program chief Don Glenn (December 7 at the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting in Reno) in which he said that the public is welcome to view the roundups at any time (hence no need for a humane observer), the public was allowed only limited access to watch the Calico roundup. Viewing was limited to three days a week by appointment only. Only 10 observers were allowed on any one day.  Even on the days the public was allowed to attend, viewers were required to leave between 1 and 2 in the afternoon, even though the Cattoor contract crew and helicopters continued to round up wild horses. Close access was denied for the last two weeks of the operation and injuries could not be detected or documented. BLM has referred to the visitors as “anti-gather advocates”. The contractors admitted that 30 wild horses captured on January 31 were left overnight in a crowded capture corral without water due to muddy conditions which prevented trucks from accessing the capture sight.

Now BLM sights are set on the wild horses of the Eagle Complex in the mountains of eastern Nevada. The area is larger than the state of Rhode Island, yet the number of mustangs allowable according to BLM is 100. At the same time, the number of privately-owned welfare cattle allowed is over 2,700.

Please keep up the call to stop the destruction of our wild herds.

Happy Trails,
Ginger Kathrens
Volunteer Executive Director

WELLINGTON, Florida, Feb. 6 – Anky van Grunsven and Salinero were in top form Saturday night to win their second straight Exquis World Dressage Masters musical freestyle at Palm Beach, beating U.S. favorite Steffen Peters and Ravel and Isabell Werth and Satchmo of Germany.

A crowd estimated at 4,300 spectators ignored a chilly South Florida night to thunderously applaud the three top riders in their first freestyle head to head competition since Steffen and Ravel won the World Cup Final in Las Vegas in 2009. Since then, Isabell took time off to have a baby just three months ago, while Anky says the past year with Salinero has been “bit up and down,” just like life.

Anky and Salinero, who won individual gold at the 2008 Olympic Games, scored 84.450 per cent, with Steffen and Ravel on 81.700 per cent and Isabell and Satchmo with 78.950 per cent. Ashley Holzer and Pop Art of Canada were fourth on 76.300 per cent. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=10147

Green Cove Springs, FL — FEB 6 2010 — Ocala, Florida based Taylor Adams began the curtain calls for the 2010 Jacksonville Winter Series on Friday evening with a big win in the $10,000 Bruning Equitation Classic, presented by the Jerry Parks Insurance Group.

Adams partnered with the Devon Walther owned Kassandra bested a field of 15 over an intricate layout of 11 obstacles co-designed by international great Pierre Jolicoeur and Joe Carnicom. The course zig-zagged the length of the covered arena as a test of each rider’s ability to collect and balance a horse, not just hand gallop or leave out strides. Offering options designed to engage the competitors’ mind.

“She’s a beautiful girl! Never puts a foot wrong – she’s Wonder Horse!” Adams complimented of “Kassie”, the 9-year-old Wurttenburg mare, who trains with the highly respected Bibby Hill. The pair began the first round 14h in the order and executed a beautiful first ride earning them a score of 89. “I usually get really nervous and push her. This morning I did that and she pretty much told she didn’t like that! So tonight I just trusted my horse – I was hyperventilating,” a laughing Adams said following her victory gallop. This evening’s course gave judges John Roper, Pat Dodson, and Diane Braun plenty of technical bends and sweeping turns to ensure an overview of the best and worst of each rider.  Only 4 competitors were asked to return for a final test over 5 obstacles requiring both a hand gallop and cross canter along the way.
