Pure Thoughts, Inc. and Florida Horse Industry Enthusiasts: Keeping Florida Horses Safe

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 | Equine Protection, Equine Welfare - Support, Horse Care | Comments

Wellington, FL – In the state of Florida, where the horse industry generates $7 billion in revenue and employs over 250,000 people, most of us never thought horse slaughter would be an issue we need to worry about.  But unfortunately, we have discovered it is indeed a concern here.  Recently the PBSO has put out a flyer with tips on how to keep your horse and your barn safe, and the ASPCA held a summit during the George Morris clinic regarding horse welfare.

With the recent discovery of horses in a pen on a slaughter farm in Miami, more crimes against horses have been discovered.  As if the cruelty of the slaughtering of horses wasn’t enough, there is a new side to this crime that makes it even more disturbing.  The demand for lean horse meat from some cultural groups has spurned a new technique that is not so new at all:  the horses are being starved before they are slaughtered.

Pure Thoughts Inc. Horse Rescue has taken in 17 of these starved, slaughter-bound horses in the past 12 days.  Jennifer Swanson, co-founder of PTHR, stated, “It has been crazy.  We have had to work diligently to find foster homes and stalls available because we are full, but the work is worth it.  This is what we have been hoping for: the stopping of horses going to slaughter. After years of traveling to kill pens and discovering that many of the horses there were from Florida, in early 2009 we decided that we need to focus on keeping the horses of this state safe.  We are working to stop them from ending up in kill auctions; we’re rescuing horses from abuse and neglect, and taking in abandonment cases. The recent uncovering of the Miami slaughterhouses has added an extreme influx, but we can and will do it.”

The responsibility and mission of Pure Thoughts, Inc. has grown exponentially in recent months, are we’re now at a point of desperate need from the public and the community. We are in need of volunteers, foster homes, adoption and donations.  Our goal this year is to expand the rescue, to show the great people of the horse industry how wonderful these horses are, and to help them make the next horse they put in their barn, a rescue horse.

Exquis World Dressage Masters Studies Brazilian Leg for 2011

wdmbrazilMonday, Feb. 1, 2010 – Just days before the start of the first leg of the 2010 Exquis World Dressage Masters (WDM) in Palm Beach, the WDM organization announced Monday the signing of a letter of intent to consider staging an event in Brazil in 2011.

Camil Smeulders, managing director of WDM, announced the signing of the letter of intent with the company Haras Vale da Raposa operated by world renowned Brazilian architect Bennett Nisencwajg and his son, Heitor.

WDM said it viewed the discussions as a major step in internationalizing dressage as the key for a sustainable future for the Olympic sport.

Brazil is considered one of the leading economies of the future and has been selected by the International Olympic Committee to host the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The city was host of the 2007 Pan American Games, which includes the three Olympic disciplines of dressage, jumping and eventing. OCALA, FL (February 2, 2010) — The second half of the four-legged, annual $20,500 Marshall & Sterling Child/Adult Jumper Championship wrapped up on Sunday with Isaac Leffkowitz on Alpha Pappa Tango being crowned the overall champion, edging out Mallory Vale and Mi Phone.

“It’s always fun to watch the final round of this class,” said Kristen Vale-Mosack, HITS Office Manager. “I was rooting for Mallory, of course and she just had that unfortunate rail. But Isaac rode really well. He had a really nice turn back to the last line in the jump-off, and even though he wasn’t fast enough for the win in the class, it was enough to give him the win overall!”

Leffkowitz finished third in the fourth leg, but his consistency throughout the competition placing third, fourth and seventh in the first three legs, earned him enough points to be crowned the champion. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=10098

AQHA Welcomes Dressage

honey_bright_dreamDressage becomes an official AQHA class.

Dressage is now an official AQHA class — one in which you can earn AQHA points, qualify for AQHA Incentive Fund earnings and compete for year-end awards. Beginning at Training Level Test 4, AQHA dressage classes will be held within existing classes at competitions recognized by the United States Dressage Federation or licensed by the United States Equestrian Federation.

The same USDF-USEF judges will preside over the AQHA classes; the only additional requirement is that the judges must be AQHA members. Exhibitors must also be current members of AQHA, and the horse must be a registered American Quarter Horse. A competition license fee of $85, good for the lifetime of the horse, is also required. The shows must be approved by AQHA at least 60 days in advance.

Horses competing in dressage are given scores, expressed in percentages. The Quarter Horse show industry has always been a point-driven system, so AQHA has created a conversion table to change dressage scores into AQHA points. View the conversion table (click on “frequently asked questions”). Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=10096
