Jacksonville A to Z and Gulfport Updates

We had another great week in Jacksonville.  This week we were minus our leader, Tony Weight, the President of NFHJA, because he had shoulder surgery, but somehow we made it through.  We all wish Tony a speedy recovery. It’s hard to believe that four weeks have gone by this fast.

The Jacksonville Winter Series is quickly drawing to a close.  Four exciting weeks have flown by, but there is still another week of fun!  The Jacksonville Finale boasts yet another $25,000 Grand Prix on Saturday, Feb. 6th at 7:00 p.m.  The $10,000 Bruning Foundation Equitation Classic presented by Jerry Parks Insurance Group will be held Friday, Feb. 5th at 7:00 p.m.  Come out and cheer on your favorite horse and rider in both of these exciting events! Plans are already underway for 2011.

On Friday night the show hosted the USHJA National Hunter Classic. Megan Young won the call aboard Levaro, owned by Rachel Herman. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=10078

Motivation from Moshi, by Jane Savoie

Moshi6

Love is a verb. Love is active. Jane knows that love does wonders for your winning attitude! You can’t hold a negative thought when you’re in a state of love.

Horses show love by scratching each other’s backs and guarding each other while we nap. We often equate love with respect. That is why we love the people who consistently guide us and keep us safe. When we’re confident that you’re a good leader, we find ourselves loving you and wanting to please you. We love the good herd-boss because he or she is the one who makes us feel secure.

Love is something you give away. The more you give it away, the more you have in your life.

Where can you demonstrate love today? How do you feel inside when you demonstrate love?

Your horse is saying, come out to the barn so I can love you up close! I miss you!

-Moshi

From Indy

Dogs understand love more than any other creature. We are born to love! You can treat us unfairly or be mean to us, and we’ll forgive you. We don’t like being treated poorly, but we can see beyond your actions and love you anyway.

Dogs are the embodiment of unconditional love. We don’t care what you look like. We don’t care if you ride well, or if you smell good, or if you have money. We simply love you. No conditions.

Jane says she does her best every day to be as good a person as I think she is. Are you as good a person as your dog thinks you are? It’s a great goal, because we think you’re wonderful!

Let’s go do something fun together. I want to show you how much I love you!

-Indy

Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping 2009/2010 – Round 9 at Zurich

Steve Guerdat (SUI) today, Sunday 31st January 2010, won the Zurich leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup.

Steve Guerdat (SUI) today, Sunday 31st January 2010, won the Zurich leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup.

STEVE REIGNS SUPREME IN THE SWISS LEG AT ZURICH

Zurich (Sui), 31 January 2010 – Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat produced a supremely confident victory in the ninth leg of the 2009/2010 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping series on his home turf at Zurich, Switzerland this afternoon.  Last to go in a thrilling nine-horse jump-off he swept the rest aside with a blistering run from Tresor whose natural speed gave him a winning margin of almost one second ahead of Germany’s Lars Nieberg with Levito.

Guerdat was delighted with today’s result, but also much-relieved.  “This season I’ve been trying really hard to get the points so that I can compete at the final in Geneva in April, but things have not been going right for me.  Maybe now it will get better,” said the 28 year old who has now risen to 22nd place in the series rankings, still headed by The Netherlands’ Eric Van der Vleuten.

FAIR COURSE
Winners have a habit of describing courses as “good” and “fair”, and that was Guerdat’s description of Rolf Ludi’s 13-fence track which included 17 jumping efforts and a double figure-of-eight as it flowed nicely around the arena.  However he also added that it was “plenty technical – enough to be sure there were many mistakes, but not bad ones that worried the horses.  It was nice to ride, and the course gave us great sport today,” he pointed out. Orlando, FL (February 1, 2010) – Highlife’s Burberry, a Weser-Ems pony stallion bred by Highlife Farms, has made history as the first U.S. bred Weser-Ems pony to be licensed as a breeding pony. Burberry’s sire is Highlife’s Bodyguard, a Weser-Ems German Riding Pony that stands at Highlife Farms, home to world class sport horses and one of the country’s most prominent breeding farms.

“It is really exciting to have bred a pony that turns out to achieve a ‘first ever’ title,” said Joan Sims, who owns the Orlando based Highlife Farms with her husband Kenny. “We sold Burberry to Heather Luing of Whispered Wish Weser-Ems in Ocala and we are so pleased for Heather that Burberry is already in the history books. We knew Burberry was an exceptional pony.”

Highlife Farms is dedicated to enriching the lives and experiences of individuals by producing world-class sport horses. The farm offers many stallions with various bloodlines that date back to early European breeding. “The pedigrees of our stallions, such as Burberry’s sire Highlife’s Bodyguard, have stood the test of time and have created some of the best sport horses in the country today,” Sims said. New Canadian Regulations Will Curtail Slaughter of North American Horses

January 31, 2010 – CHICAGO (EWA) – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued the long awaited health requirements for all horses bound for slaughter in Canada. In 2009, 56% of the 93,812 horses slaughtered in Canada were U.S. exports.

The requirements posted on the CFIA website state, “Effective July 31, 2010, it will be mandatory for all CFIA inspected facilities in Canada engaged in the slaughter of equines for edible purposes to have complete records for all animals (domestic and imported) presented for slaughter.”

A January 21st article in the Western Producer indicated that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was cooperating with the CFIA. When contacted on January 28th to determine how the USDA was cooperating, Dr. Cordes, National Equine Coordinator, stated that compliance was Canada’s responsibility. Wellington, FL – February 1, 2010 – Todd Minikus of Loxahatchee, FL, and Pavarotti proved to be the best in the $75,000 Nespresso Grand Prix held on Sunday, January 31, at the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. Minikus and the handy chestnut Pavarotti sped through a jump-off course to beat Nick Skelton (GBR) and Carlo 273, owned by Beverly Widdowson, and Lauren Hough on Highlife Farm’s Prezioso S.

The third week of the FTI WEF is sponsored by Nespresso and concluded on Sunday, January 31. The 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival has 12 weeks of competition that conclude on April 4, 2010, and they will be awarding almost $6 million in prize money through the circuit.

Germany’s Olaf Petersen Jr. designed the course with 13 numbered obstacles in the first round, including a triple combination and an orange oxer at the end of the course that seemed to get the best of most of the competitors. The time allowed in the first round was 76 seconds. A total of 41 horse and rider pairs from 11 different countries came out today to dominate the first course, but only seven managed to advance to the short course without faults.
