Lexington, KY – At the conclusion of 2012 the US Eventing Program will undergo a significant change. After 20 years, Capt. Mark Phillips has announced his retirement as Chef d’Equipe and Technical Advisor following the London Olympic Games to “give someone else the opportunity to put their stamp on the program.”

To date, Capt. Phillips has led the Eventing Team to 23 Team and Individual medals during his time at the helm of the program. Highlights include Team Silver and Individual Bronze at the 1996 Olympic Games, Team Bronze and Individual Gold at the 2000 Olympic Games, Team Bronze and Individual Silver at the 2004 Olympic Games and Individual Silver at the 2008 Olympic Games. His teams also won Team Gold at the Pan American Games in 1999, 2003 and 2007 and Team Gold at the 2002 World Equestrian Games.

In order to create a timely and seamless transition for the program, the process for identifying Phillips’ successor has begun. The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) will announce the members of the Search Committee in the near future. The search committee will include athletes, committee members and experts in Equestrian sport.

The search committee’s initial responsibility will be to develop a job description and timeline to integrate the new person into the eventing program to insure that our athlete’s access to world class coaching is not interrupted.

The USEF anticipates posting the position in 2010.

The Art of the Western Saddle Exhibition to Premiere in Amarillo

A celebration of the design, style and grace of the western saddle will open to the public for the first time January 22.

America’s Horse, January 21, 2010 – The western saddle is one of the great executions of form and function merging into a third greater thing – art. Its design is built around use, lightness, durability and fit to give the rider the ability to stay on board while at the same time not getting in the way of the horse, all the while being able to hold an 800-pound steer by only a rope wound around the saddle horn.

But more than a tool, western saddles are iconic representations of the work of an indigenous root-based culture in America. As much a part of the cowboy way as a hat and a pair of boots, saddles spoke of work in a unique vocation. Work performed by man and animal together, a task that remains remarkably unchanged due to the nature of the work itself – the moving and caring of livestock.

Like any tool, the saddle became an extension of those who used it and because of that became subject to personalization. That unique personalization and embellishment – call it character – is the basis for a new exhibition opening at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in this month. The Art of the Western Saddle will feature 16 glorious examples of the saddlemaker’s art. Curated by western historian and author William C. Reynolds, the exhibit will feature silver-mounted saddles from important private collections and museums across the country. The collection will display the saddles’ unique design, craftsmanship and graceful merging of silver, gold and leather.

Many of the saddles have never been exhibited in public, and the exhibition will be a unique opportunity to see the pinnacle of craftsmanship, embellishing the primary tool of the American cowboy. The exhibit opens January 22, 2010, and will continue through July 31, 2010, at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas. Louise Serio was awarded the Western Hay and Suncoast Shavings Second Year Green Working Hunter reserve championship aboard Paige Cole's Kid Rock.

Wellington, FL – January 21, 2010 – Sunny skies illuminated the E. R. Mische Hunter Arena this afternoon as the professional hunters finished their second day of showing during week two of the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, which runs for 12 weeks through April 4.

Emerging victorious today to earn the championship in the Western Hay and Suncoast Shavings Second Year Green Working Hunters were Shane Sweetnam and Take Note, owned by Lindsey Tomeu.  Take Note received a second place over fences yesterday, won the under saddle, and placed third and seventh over fences today to clinch the championship. The reserve champion award went to Louise Serio and Kid Rock, owned by Paige Cole.

Sweetnam originally hails from Ireland, but now bases out of Wellington, FL, and Lexington, KY, where he rides for Spy Coast Farm and Sweet Oak Farm.  Sweetnam describes Take Note, an 8-year-old Swedish Warmblood, as “very talented and beautiful to ride.” “The jump is fantastic, he’s never spooky, and he’s very rideable,” Sweetnam commented on his mount.
