FEI Launches New Eventing Risk Management Programme

FEI_Logo-200Malmö (SWE), 17 January 2010 – A new worldwide Eventing Risk Management Policy and Action Plan aimed at reducing cross-country horse falls was launched at the third annual FEI Safety meeting in Malmö, Sweden, today. Based on a six-year statistical study of the sport, the Action Plan will be a functional and reliable system that will be used to monitor risk factors in Eventing, and to streamline international data and ideas to further understand the root causes of falls.

The FEI Eventing Committee has set the target to reduce horse falls by 10% (and by 20% at 4-star level) over the next three years. Already, data for the period from 2004-2009 shows that, despite a significant increase in the popularity of the sport – a 35% increase in the number of competitions and a 22.5% increase in the total number of starters – the percentage of horse falls has decreased from 2.02% to 1.73%. This is the first time that a statistical database has monitored the sport on a global basis.

“Eventing is and will remain a risk sport. Our duty is to manage that risk,” explains Giuseppe Della Chiesa (ITA), the new chairman of the FEI Eventing Committee and the FEI Eventing Risk Management Advisor. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9832

Cloud’s Herd & Rescued Bands Update

Shane_band_lighter

A letter and travel journal from Ginger Kathrens

Dear Friends of Cloud and his family and all our wild horses;

After Christmas, Ann Evans (owner of Cloud’s sisters, Smokey and Mahogany, and my dear friend), Connor (my Irish Terrier), and I traveled north to Montana. First we visited our Freedom Fund horses on the ranch just north of the Pryor Mountains.

Only with your help and immediate action were we able to adopt and purchase these 15 after the disastrous roundup in September 2009. BLM removed every horse from Commissary Ridge in the Custer National Forest at the request of the Forest Service. In their defense, I do not believe that the Forest Service managers knew that BLM was permanently removing all of them, but were under the impression at least some would be allowed to go free in the designated range. But, BLM surprised all of us and did not let one horse go free — not even the 19-year-old band stallion Conquistador or the 21-year-old mare Grumpy Grulla.

It is my great pleasure to report to you that all 15 in four bands look fabulous! They have settled in to a pasture in the shadow of the Pryors, an expansive, scenic area bisected by a willow-lined creek below colorful red rock cliffs.

Darragh Kenny & Obelix Triumph in $100k Green Cove Springs World Cup Qualifier

Darragh Kenny & Obelix

Darragh Kenny & Obelix

Green Cove Springs, FL – Irish born Darragh Kenny, now based in Rexford, NY, partnered with Obelix, bested 27 of the top names in the show jumping world and won the $100,000 Green Cove Springs CSI2* Grand Prix, a World Cup Qualifier, sponsored by Glen Kernan Golf & Country Club.

Awed spectators were treated to an International All Star event with riders representing the Olympics, World Equestrian Games, Pan Am Games, Samsung Super League and of course World Cup Championships. All at the mercy course designer Dave Ballard’s very technical 14 fence [17 effort] layout that serpentine from one end of the arena to the other and all riders hoping to move one step closer to the FEI World Cup Finals in Switzerland.

Ballard, whose home base is Ontario, Canada, is known globally for creating some of the most technical and unique layouts in the sport of show jumping including the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, Canada, and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Tonight’s first round demonstrated why the O Class designer is so highly regarded, and often feared. Despite two big combinations, a triple at 5ABC and double at 11AB, the real test of talent and control began at the #6 oxer with a sharp right turn over the #7 vertical, hard left over #8 oxer and immediate hard right to the #9 oxer. Success meant passing the test clear in under 88 seconds, a task only 7 would accomplish. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9827
