“Dances with Wolves” and “Phantom Stallion” Authors Speak Out against Wild Horse Roundups
Announcing a special press conference: Michael Blake, Academy Award-winning author of Dances with Wolves, and Terri Farley, author of the popular Phantom Stallion book series, join together at 5 P.M. in the Rex Roth Room at Hotel Rex, 562 Sutter Street in San Francisco to protest the dead-of-winter roundups of wild horses on Nevada’s Calico Range. The two authors want the American public to hear their stories and stand up for the wild horses and burros before they exist only in books. They ask the public to write President Obama requesting a moratorium on wild horse and burro roundups until the American public can work with Congress to create a sustainable plan to protect our legends of the West.

SUCCEED/Wellington Classic Dressage USET Foundation Holiday Gala Raises More Than $20,000 for U.S. Equestrian Team
West Palm Beach, Florida — The inaugural SUCCEED/Wellington Classic Dressage USET Foundation Holiday Gala raised $20,853 for the U.S. Equestrian Team. The fundraiser was held during the Dec. 11-13 Wellington Classic Dressage Holiday Challenge at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center.
“We’re ecstatic with how it went,” said SUCCEED CEO John Hall. USET Foundation Executive Director Bonnie B. Jenkins expressed gratitude to Succeed and Wellington Classic Dressage for hosting the event saying that it was a great way to start the holiday season. Events such as the USET Foundation Gala play an important role in helping the USET cover the costs of having U.S. teams compete in international competition and John Flanagan, sponsorship coordinator for Wellington Classic Dressage, said Wellington Classic Dressage was honored to play host. “We’re happy to help the USET Foundation, especially when we can host an event that not only raises money for our equestrian team, but that is also a lot of fun for all,” he said.
Hall said the gala event will help support the U.S. Equestrian Team during the 2010 Alltech World Equestrian Games. “And, it was a very successful event and also very fun,” he said. “There was a wonderful comradeship that was established among the many competitors from all these different equestrian disciplines who attended. We must also credit the generosity of the many companies that provided products for the silent auction.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9587
Japan's Eiken Sato created a sensation when steering BV Project Cartoon Z to victory in the seventh leg of the 2009/2010 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping series in Mechelen, Belgium today where Philippe de Baets, Director, Rolex Benelux presented him with his award.
SATO SPRINGS A BIG SURPRISE AT MECHELEN
Mechelen (Bel), 30 December 2009 – Japan’s Eiken Sato sprung a massive surprise when scooping the honours in the seventh leg of the 2009/2010 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping series in Mechelen, Belgium today. With his 10 year old stallion BV Project Cartoon Z the relatively unknown 23 year old from Nagano produced one of eight first-round clears over the massive track built by Lucien Somers and with youthful enthusiasm then devastated the opposition with a daredevil ride against the clock. Ireland’s Jessica Kuerten had to settle for second with her great mare Castle Forbes Libertina while the host country’s Patrick McEntee and Ever Mury Marais Z slotted into third.
Sato looked as cool as a cucumber while executing his historic victory, but with a great tremble in his voice he said afterwards “I have this most wonderful horse, and I am so lucky. He’s not just my horse – he is my friend!”
BIG AND BOLD
During the course-walk, Kuerten described the track as “big and ugly”, and that was how it certainly must have seemed to the early starters, many of whom found it too great a challenge. It was not particularly technical and the time-allowed was generous, but it demanded scope from the horses and strength from the riders, and 13 partnerships came into the ring before the first clear round was recorded by the home side’s Yves Vanderhasselt and Adamo Van’T Steenputje. By then there had already been four retirements and one elimination as proof of just how difficult it could be. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9585
Magazines Merge: After 20 years of separation, AQHA’s Journals reunite, starting in January.
The American Quarter Horse Journal, December 16, 2009 – For more than 20 years, The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal has been a stand-alone publication serving racing owners, breeders, trainers and fans. It wasn’t always that way. Starting with the first issue of The Quarter Horse Journal in 1948, racing has always been an integral part of the American Quarter Horse and the American Quarter Horse Association.
Starting with the January 2010 issue, the Racing Journal will again be a part of The American Quarter Horse Journal. The Racing Journal section — Q-Racing — will join the other discipline sections: halter; rail and pattern; reining, cutting and cow horse; and ranching, rodeo and ropes.
“This decision was not an easy one to make, and many different scenarios were considered before the AQHA Executive Committee and Racing Council approved this change,” said Jim Bret Campbell, AQHA’s senior director of marketing and publications. “Many consumer publications have had to restructure how they do business or have gone out of business altogether. After considering all of the options, allowing this change seemed the best way to continue serving our members, subscribers and advertisers.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9583
