House, DVM, DACVIM American Quarter Horses Compete in CRI2* Event at AQHA World Championship ShowThe American Quarter Horse Journal, November 17, 2009 — On Monday, November 16, 2009, the American Quarter Horse Association hosted an International Equestrian Federation CRI2* (Concours de Reining Internationale) event at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. The FEI competition took place in conjunction with the senior reining preliminaries during the FedEx Open AQHA World Championship Show. “We had a great event here during the World Show, which can be told by the number of entries we had – 15 – and especially the five international entries that we had,” said AQHA Professional Horseman Pete Kyle, who won the November 16 event aboard Gimme Major Bucks, scoring a 217.5. The Whitesboro, Texas, horseman is also the chair of the United States Equestrian Federation Reining High Performance Committee. “It was one of our qualifiers for the U.S. Team Selection Trial to be held at the Battle in the Saddle in July 2010 in Oklahoma City,” Kyle added. The legendary painting by the late American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Orren Mixer was purchased by Hendrik and Lettie Smeding of Pope Valley, California, via telephone bid. The painting was commissioned by Rex Cauble, the last recorded owner of Wimpy P-1, the first horse registered with the American Quarter Horse Association at its founding. It was consigned by Reynolds and Lisa Moreland of Mays Lick, Kentucky, who purchased the painting from Cauble prior to his death in 2003. “We had inquiries about the painting,” Reynolds said about his decision to sell the painting, the original of an iconic image of Wimpy P-1 used publicly for decades. “I had people approach me to give it away.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8892 FEI Extraordinary General Assembly Votes against New StatutesCopenhagen (DEN), 17 November 2009 – Today, 17 November, the FEI Extraordinary General Assembly, held in Copenhagen (DEN), voted against the adoption of new Statutes for the restructuring of the FEI Bureau, the current governing body. A hundred and two (102) National Federations were represented, 85 in person and 17 by proxy. Out of 98 valid votes cast, there were 49 against, 48 in favour and one abstention. Consequently, the FEI will continue to be governed by a 19-member Bureau rather than the proposed seven-member Board. The FEI modernisation process, championed by former FEI President HRH Doña Pilar de Borbón, began 12 years ago and was accepted in principle by the FEI General Assembly in 2005 in London. The main objective of the proposed reform is to achieve a smaller and dynamic Board, which is both competency based and regionally balanced. Today’s vote was preceded by extensive consultation which took place throughout the summer ensuring National Federations were listened to and that their feedback was integrated as much as possible. In order to ensure regional representation, the original proposal was to have no more than two members per continent. On the basis of additional feedback from National Federations in South and Central America, it was modified not to allow more than one member per Regional Group. To guarantee the respect of democratic principles also called upon by European National Federations, the proposed election process provided for all candidates to be put to the vote of the General Assembly. The modernisation process will not be on the agenda of the 2010 General Assembly, given the FEI’s need to focus on a number of priorities in the areas of development, horse welfare and commercial initiatives, among others. An additional factor is that 2010 is an election year in the FEI. The welfare of the horse has always been and will always be at the core of every aspect of the Federation’s work as the international governing body for equestrian sport. During its meeting in Copenhagen (DEN) on 15 November, the FEI Bureau had extensive discussion on the issue of hyperflexion. The FEI Bureau insists that, with immediate effect, stewards in all disciplines use the disciplinary measures available to them, such as verbal warnings and yellow warning cards *, to prevent any infringement of FEI rules. The FEI is now engaged with World Horse Welfare, a leading international equestrian organisation, in addition to continued consultation with riders, trainers, officials and veterinarians to thoroughly research the issues. The further education of stewards will also continue to ensure that welfare issues at FEI events are dealt with promptly and professionally. The FEI acknowledges and welcomes public opinion and will continue to ensure that the welfare of the horse, which has been central to this debate, will remain its absolute priority. * If a rider receives two yellow warning cards within one year, he or she is automatically suspended for a period of two months immediately following the event at which the second yellow warning card was received. (November 17, 2009) – Chasta Harrison and her Miniature Horse Curry’s Saturday Night Special proved they were special at the 2009 American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR) National Championship Show when Harrison’s filly won the Vetrolin Grooming Award, sponsored by Farnam. Winning the title of “Best Groomed” horse at the show earned Curry’s Saturday Night Special and Harrison a year’s supply of Vetrolin Grooming Products provided by Farnam. “My mom and I do all our own grooming so it is really exciting to win the Vetrolin Grooming Award,” Harrison said. “We are perfectionists when it comes to grooming. We are strict on color; we want the white to be white.” Harrison, who lives in Heber Springs, Arkansas, has over 20 minis on her Mini h Farm. Curry’s Saturday Night Special was one of three minis she took to the National Championships. “She is a strawberry roan sabino filly,” Harrison said, in describing the filly’s beautiful coloring. Harrison recently graduated from Arkansas Tech University and is hoping to attend vet school. “We already use Vetrolin shampoo and conditioner on our minis and I am really looking forward to trying the other Vetrolin products,” Harrison said. “I have heard so many great things about the detangler and I can’t wait to try it.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8882 2,500 Wild Horses to Be Rounded Up in Dead of WinterAssault Planned on Last Stronghold of Wild Horse Herds Dear Supporters, Despite a significant public outcry, BLM plans a helicopter round up to remove thousands of wild horses in northwestern Nevada, an area called the Calico Complex in a remote and starkly beautiful landscape of volcanic outcrops, steep canyons and wide valleys. It is home to over 3,000 wild horses and represents the last stronghold of the once large herds of American mustangs that roamed the west by the millions. The attack on Calico is scheduled to begin in December and continue through the dead of winter. Calico is a challenging environment in winter when bitter winds howl and blizzards are common. If BLM were truly interested in preserving wild horses they would not run them over treacherous terrain in winter when all wildlife are simply trying to survive by expending the least amount of energy possible. Regardless, BLM intends to round up from 2486 to 2747 mustangs, taking away from them what they value most – their freedom and the families. They plan to release only 264 horses (80 mares, all treated with infertility drugs, and 184 stallions) back onto 1.5 million acres of our public lands, and incarcerate the rest in holding facilities already bursting at the seams. Taxpayers pay over $100,000 a day to feed these captives who were removed to make room for more welfare cattle on public lands. Because only 264 wild horses will be turned back into four herd areas, each herd will be genetically non-viable and left vulnerable to inbreeding. SURPRISINGLY, the Irish, with their impressive winning record at the Cheltenham Festival in March, had not won the Paddy Power Gold Cup or its equivalent for almost three decades but this year the Edward O’Grady trained ‘Tranquil Sea’ cast adrift his 15 rivals before the home straight to the sheer delight of the crowd. Jubilant jockey Andrew McNamara couldn’t hide his joy when the well backed 11-2 favourite came home four and a half lengths in front of ‘Poquelin’, with ‘Hold Em’ third and ‘Ballyfitz’ fourth. The seven year old bay travelled comfortably throughout the two and a half mile race to scoop the lion’s share of the £150,000 prize fund. More reasons to celebrate followed when two hundred people in the Club Enclosure took advantage of a full £30 ticket refund, promised to them if the Irish won the big race. Friday’s hugely popular Countryside Raceday with its traditional country fair atmosphere featured the unique Glenfarclas Cross Country Steeplechase – a course combining hedges, banks and timber rails over a distance just short of four miles. Irish horses have dominated this race in recent times, this running being no exception. Favourite ‘Garde Champetre’ powered home to an outstanding success when given a confident ride by jockey Nina Carberry, beating stablemate ‘Headsontheground’. Sporting the well known green and gold colours of legendary gambler JP McManus and trained by Enda Bolger, ‘Garde Champetre’ follows in the footsteps of four times winner (2004 – 07) ‘Spotthedifference’, owned and trained by the same duo. Although ‘Garde Champetre’ may now return to Cheltenham for the cross-country race next month, he is not expected to run in the Grand National in April.
