Varsity Equestrian 2009-2010 season under way with great competition for athletes and horses.
The American Quarter Horse Journal, October 22, 2009 – While football might be the college sport that gets the most attention in the fall, the newest sport to attract female athletes to universities across the country is Varsity Equestrian. The NCAA emerging sport of equestrian competition pits women against their peers in western and English contests. In western competition, the riders compete in horsemanship and reining.
“It’s a great use of the American Quarter Horse,” said Leman Wall, director of corporate and affiliate partnerships for AQHA. “These well-trained horses have good jobs, and the young women in Varsity Equestrian competition are terrific athletes.”
In the season’s latest poll of coaches, Auburn University is ranked first. The University of South Carolina, who was ranked on top in the season’s first poll fell to No. 2. Last year’s overall winner, the University of Georgia, is ranked third. The Georgia Bulldogs were also the English-division winners last year. Last year’s western division winners, the Aggies of Texas A&M University, were ranked sixth in the coaches’ poll. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8611
Junebug, an Appaloosa who is among the horses coming from KyEHC to the Kentucky Horse Park
LEXINGTON, KY (October 23, 2009) The Kentucky Horse Park and the Kentucky Equine Humane Center are partnering in a new project to assist Kentucky’s unwanted horses.
Last week the Kentucky Horse Park became aware that some unwanted, pregnant Thoroughbred mares were in need of a home. The owner of the mares no longer wanted them, and sent them to the Kentucky Equine Humane Center (KyEHC), a 72-acre facility located in central Kentucky. The KyEHC is a model shelter for equines from across the state. No horse in need of shelter is ever turned away, regardless of breed or mix of breed. The number of horses they have taken in has swelled recently, including the pregnant mares, so they contacted the Kentucky Horse Park for assistance.
“We are ever mindful of the responsibilities that march in tandem with the privileges of being the Horse Capital of the World,” stated John Nicholson, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park. “So we had to make an important decision. The easy choice would have been to make excuses not to get involved, or to look the other way and hope that someone else would help these mares. The more difficult choice would entail taking on several new, high-maintenance horses, thus significantly increasing the work load for our already-overworked staff.” He continued, “We made the right decision.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8609

BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR TOWNEND AT HSBC FEI CLASSICS CLIMAX
23 October 2009 – Oliver Townend must be getting used to heading the leaderboard this season, and after a fluent display on Andrew Cawthray’s eye-catching grey Carousel Quest on Dressage day at Les Etoiles de Pau, the climax of the 2009 Eventing season, it’s business as usual for the 26-year-old star.
After a fluent display on Andrew Cawthray’s eye-catching grey, Carousel Quest, the ever-focused Townend is in first place but, despite the luxury of his strong lead in the valuable HSBC FEI Classics, of which this is the finale, he isn’t relaxing yet and declares himself fully intending to ride with his usual trademark competitive style over Pierre Michelet’s (FRA) thought-provoking Cross-Country course tomorrow.
HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The Bureau of Land Management’s concerted effort to thin the herds of wild horses on land it manages has proven deadly, so deadly in fact, that for each of the last two years (and this year’s not over yet) there have been fatalities on almost half of the “gathers” the agency has conducted.
And last week, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced the roundups will continue as herds across the West will be reduced as horses are moved from their natural habitat to artificial refuges in the Midwest and East – this despite the 256 million acres potentially available to the animals on BLM lands.
Washington, D.C. – October 22, 2009 – It was another exciting day of competition at the 2009 Washington International Horse Show (WIHS), as the schedule featured four jumper classes for amateur-owner, junior, and open jumpers. The highlight class of the day was the $30,000 Open Jumper Time First Jump-off class, and Olympic gold medalist McLain Ward (USA) took the top prize on Couletto K James. Andres Rodriguez (VEN) and Da Vinci were victorious in the $20,000 Open Jumper Gambler’s Choice Costume class, presented by Honeywell International, Inc.
Earlier in the day, Lillian Hahn won the Amateur-Owner Time First Round on Lucky One, and Navona Gallegos on Drossana took first place in the opening Junior Jumper Time First Jump-off class.
This week’s courses are designed by Guilherme Jorge of Brazil. In the $30,000 Open Jumper class, 30 horses went to post in the first round. There were six clear rounds that returned for the jump-off, with the first horse in the ring setting the pace. Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) and new mount Night Train, owned by Double H Farm, were double clear and stopped the timers in the jump-off in 30.45 seconds.
