Atlanta Olympics in 1996 - Team gold and Individual Silver.

Olympic gold medal winner Gigolo FRH, horse of renowned equestrian Isabella Werth, has died at the age of Twenty-Six.

On September 23rd, Isabella Weth’s top level dressage horse was put down after declining health resulting from an injury. Winner of four Olympic gold medals, two Olympic silver medals, four World Championships, eight European Championships and four German titles, Gigolo proudly served as Isabella’s friend, teacher and sport partner for many years.

Bred by Horst Klussman (Pursau) (Graditz x Bunett by Busoni xx), Gigolo was discovered by Dr Schulten-Baumer. Although a plain horse to look at, but he thrilled spectators with his precision and charisma. Born in 1983, he was ridden by Werth for twenty years.

Werth and Gigolo won both team and individual gold at the European Championships at Donaueschingen in 1991. They repeated the double in 1993 at Lipica, in 1995 at Mondorf, and in 1997 at Verden. At the 1994 World Equestrian Games in The Netherlands and in 1998 in Rome the pair also won two gold medals each time.

Gigolo’s four Olympic gold medals were won in 1996 in Atlanta (individual and team gold), 1992 in Barcelona, and 2000 in Sydney (team gold). The two individual Olympic silver medals were in Barcelona and Sydney.

FEI TV – Further LIVE broadcasts from the FEI World Cup Dressage 2009-2010 are planned from: Stockholm (SWE), 6 December 2009; Amsterdam (NED), 23 January 2010; Gothenburg (SWE), 27 February 2010; s’Hertogenbsoch (NED), 27 March 2010.

ANKY WINS THE OPENING LEG AT ODENSE

Anky Van Grunsven won the opening leg of the FEI World Cup Dressage series in Odense, Denmark today with a great Freestyle ride from her Olympic champion Salinero.  So often recently the Dutch star has been frustrated by her gelding’s unwillingness to be still in halt, but today the 15 year old horse conquered his anxiety to produce a lovely test that pleased the judging panel of Wim Emes (Ned), Jean-Michel Roudier (Fra), Kurt Christensen (Den), Jacques van Daele (Bel) and Gotthilf Riexinger (Ger) to earn a winning score of 81.450.

“The judges really enjoyed the riding we saw today,” said Mr Roudier afterwards.  “Here, on the second day in Odense, the horses had improved significantly.  As judges we like to give out eights and nines and we did,” he added. Helsinki (Fin), 18 October 2009

Photo Caption: Anthony Schaub of Rolex presents winning rider Daniel Etter (Sui) with yet another Rolex watch after his second successive victory with Peu a Peu in the 2009/2010 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping series in Helsinki, Finland.

DANIEL DOES THE DOUBLE AT HELSINKI

Daniel Etter scored a back-to-back double when storming to victory in the second leg of the 2009/2010 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping series in Helsinki, Finland this afternoon.  Winners of the opening round in Oslo just a week ago, the Swiss rider and his superb 13 year old gelding Peu a Peu made it look easy when confidently setting a target in the 10-horse jump-off that none of the rest could match once again.

America’s Lauren Hough didn’t hold back when galloping into second place with Quick Study who was only fractionally slower, while Holland’s Eric van der Vleuten finished third ahead of Sweden’s Svante Johansson in fourth.  This was another top-class field today, and in the tight confines of the Helsinki arena course-designer Olaf Petersen tested control, rideability and obedience to the very limit.
