October 4th 2009 – Sea the Stars made turf history on Sunday by winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, becoming the first horse to win three of Europe’s top races – the 2,000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the Arc.
Fifty thousand fans gathered in the Parisian Autumn sunlight to welcome this phenomenal horse, son of former 1993 Arc winner Urban Sea and sire Cape Cross.
The 3 year old colt took advantage of an excellent draw and perfect racing conditions following a week of dry weather in Paris. Trainer John Oxx had prior concerns that rain could have softened the ground and hindered the chances of the hot favourite. Nineteen runners competed for a share of the 4 million euros prize money and the World’s richest turf race, and despite pulling hard in the early stages and being hemmed in along the rails for much of the way, this home bred hero was far too good for his rivals. Upper Marlboro, MD – October 6, 2009 – Katherine Newman of Wellington, FL, added another incredible win to her list of accomplishments this past week at the Capital Challenge Horse Show. Newman took first place in the $5,000 Emerging Professional Rider Challenge, a class open to professionals who have yet to win a championship at the Devon Horse Show or any of the fall indoor horse shows. Eighteen-year-old Newman earned numerous tricolors at indoors as a junior competitor; however, this is her first year riding as a professional.
The one round class welcomed over 25 competitive horse and rider combinations, and Newman’s smooth round and high score of 87.66 secured her the win. She rode Daydream, owned by Mimi Abel-Smith of Middleburg, VA. Newman, who has ridden Daydream for five years, rides as a professional for her parents, Kathy and Gerry Newman. They own Allwyn Court, a hunter/jumper show stable based in Wellington, FL.
“It was a great week,” smiled Newman. “It was really exciting because that was my first big win as a professional. I had actually qualified for the regular Professional Hunter Challenge, and it went right before the Emerging Pro class. I was able to go in there and kind of practice a little,” she said. “It was a lot of fun because I know Daydream so well, and I don’t have insecurities with him in the ring.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8396
