Old Friends Welcomes Multiple Graded Stakes Winner Bluesthestandard

GEORGETOWN, KY — OCTOBER 2, 2009 — Multiple graded stakes winner Bluesthestandard, who ascended from the ranks of $10,000 claimers to earn more than $1 million on the racetrack, will arrive tomorrow at Old Friends’ Dream Chase Farm in Georgetown, KY where he will spend the rest of his days.

The popular son of American Standard was bred by well-known Hunter/Jumper competitor and trainer Terry Brown whose farm, Showcase LTD, is based in Canton, GA. Bluesthestandard is one of two stakes–winning race horses Brown has bred.

“He was born at my farm,” laughed Brown. “A horse like this just holds out hope for every breeder,” Brown continued. “It shows that it doesn’t take just money, it takes the heart and courage of a Thoroughbred. We’re so thrilled he ended up at Old Friends.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8365

We delve into the ethical situations we all run into as horse people, the “what would you do” situations. Joining us is Karen who writes the Ethical Horsemanship Blog. Listen in to this lively discussion…

Stable Scoop Episode 59 – The Ethics of Riding – What Would You Do?

  • Thank you to our guest this week, Karen from New Zealand. Visit her ethical horsemanship blog.
  • What would you do in these situations? We want your feedback – please comment below or write to us through our contact link.
    • You pull up to a lovely stable for your lesson with a new trainer. There are fancy cars and lots of stalls. You notice there aren’t any horses outside and it’s a beautiful, bug-free day. Not much turnout, sure, but at least a few horses should be out, no? You go into the stable and see all 22 horses inside dark, dusty stalls. The lesson horses are in fair weight, but their tack is disgusting and there are signs of neglect everywhere. Parked out front of the stable is the owner/manager’s fancy sports car. The girths inside are falling apart. The DILEMMA: The trainer has been recommended by a few people you hold in high regard. What do you do?
    • You see a fellow boarder mistreating her horse and she doesn’t know you’ve seen anything. Do you speak up about it? If so, to whom?
    • If you were invited to a fancy dinner party overseas and horsemeat was on the menu, would you try it?
    • A trail buddy has been riding rather dangerously. There aren’t many folks to ride out with these days. Do you go with him or do you pass on the company and ride out alone?

The hunter courses for this week are designed by Michael Rheinheimer of Willoughby, OH, and the jumper courses are designed by Conrad Homfeld of Wellington, FL.

The Amateur-Owner Hunters were split by age into two divisions. In the Amateur-Owner 18-35 Hunters, Erin Stewart of Ocala, FL, rode Quality Time to the championship for her father, Don Stewart. Todd Flettrich & Otto Make Their Musical Freestyle Debut under Lights at Dressage at Devon

Devon, PA – October 1, 2009 – Dressage trainer Todd Flettrich and his mount Otto had a very successful weekend competing at Dressage at Devon, the world-renowned competition held each year at the Devon show grounds in Pennsylvania. This year’s competition was held September 22-27, 2009, and Flettrich and Otto showed in the FEI Grand Prix de Dressage and FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDIW classes, which were held Friday and Saturday evenings under the lights in the famous Dixon Oval. Otto is owned by Cherry Knoll Farm, located in West Grove, PA, not far from Devon.

Todd Flettrich and Otto began their competition at Devon by earning the third place honors in Friday night’s FEI Grand Prix de Dressage with a score of 65.830%.  The pair earned an impressive 69% from the judge at ‘M’ and received very complimentary comments across the board. The weekend’s judges included Leyman, Ernes, Zang, Gribbons, and Hess.

Flettrich explained that he and Otto had a bobble in the one tempo during their Grand Prix test and said that the halt rein back was not good, but he was very pleased with the performance overall.  “When we I came into the arena I thought we were going to have a super ride, unfortunately I lost the connection and tension in the halt rein back,” Flettrich stated. “There was a nice sized crowd in the stands and this was our first time competing together in a bigger atmosphere at night under the lights, so although Otto got a little distracted by the environment, I was very happy with the ride overall.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8356

Mission to Haiti Engages South Fla. Youth in Community Service & Social Entrepreneurship

Daniela-Liane-handing-group

Miami, Florida, October 1, 2009 – Step by Step Foundation gathered a group of youth from South Florida for a community service trip to the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere – Haiti. The youth traveled to the remote fishing village of Lahaie on the south-western tip of Haiti, where the foundation is building a school and providing educational supplies, school uniforms, and personal water filters to the children of the school.

The trip not only provided the youth with an opportunity to bring much-needed educational supplies to the school, but also to consider how they could continue to help through community service and social enterprise activities in the short and long term. One of the youth, Salomon Gicherman, introduced a life-saving personal water filter – the LifeStraw – to Step by Step Foundation last year. During the mission, Salomon proudly demonstrated to teachers how to use the filter to prevent water-borne disease. “Bringing LifeStraws to the community felt amazing,” said Salomon. “Seeing their appreciative faces as I gave them away to have one year of clean water was indescribable.”

“Step by Step Foundation has been working in Lahaie for several years, and completing the construction of the Tipa Tipa elementary school is our priority – it is a symbol of hope and aspiration for the entire community,” commented Liliane Stransky, President and Founder. “The community also lacks access to safe water and health services, so we are expanding our program to encompass those and other development projects.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8354
