The EQUUS Foundation Announces 2009 Grant Awards

equus-200WESTPORT, CT – September 2, 2009 — The Board of Directors of The EQUUS Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the award of its 2009 grants to 49 charitable organizations that use the horse to benefit the public; promote the horse’s health and welfare; and elevate the equestrian sport.

Public Welfare Grants are awarded for therapeutic riding programs and other equine-assisted activities for individuals with physical, emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities, life-threatening or other serious illnesses, and underserved, economically-disadvantaged and “at-risk” youth. Horse Welfare Grants are awarded for horse rescue, rehabilitation, adoption and retirement; veterinary education and research; and equine ambulance services. Sport Welfare Grants are awarded to enhance the equestrian sport, through scholarships, awards, youth involvement, relief for equestrians in need, and programs to promote public education and awareness.

“We are thrilled that with the 2009 awards, we are topping $1.3 million in grants since our first awards in 2003, achieving this almost entirely from special events and our newly-established Horse Whisperers program where donors may make a multi-year pledge and have a grant named by the donor in honor of a family member, friend, associate, or in the memory of a loved one or a loved equine companion”, said Jenny Belknap Kees, Chairman. On Special Anniversary, Wood Has Three Chances to Win All American Futurity

The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal, September 2, 2009 – Thirty years ago, Blane Wood was at Ruidoso Downs in Ruidoso, New Mexico, working for his late father, trainer Leo Wood. In his care was Pie In The Sky, an Easy Jet colt owned by Dan and Jolene Urschel who had become the fastest qualifier to the $1 million All American Futurity, the American Quarter Horse industry’s richest race for 2-year-old American Quarter Horses.

Wood, who was 20 at the time, led Pie In The Sky to the paddock for American Quarter Horse racing’s most famous event, which the previous year had become the world’s first million dollar horse race. After his father saddled Pie In The Sky, Blane ponied the colt and jockey Danny Cardoza to the starting gate.

“I told Dad that if we win this race – I’m at the gates, I can’t see the race – to be sure and wave your hat or something,” Wood recalled. “I remember Dad on the outside of the track doing like this (waves his arms). We got down there by the winner’s circle, and we cried like babies.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=7882
