The length of the story is not of great importance; however, if you can keep it down to approximately 2 pages that might be best. Please understand that almost all stories get edited in one way or another. Please be sure to mark your pictures well, so I know for certain who is who. Only freezemarked mustangs or burros, please. Contact: A Horse Blog – Request to Florida VeterinariansBy Dr. Thomas Holt, State Veterinarian/Director The Florida Veterinary Medical Association, The College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services are working together to establish a volunteer corps of veterinarians and veterinary technicians who will support response measures in the event of an emergency involving animals and animal health. Florida is continually threatened by natural disasters such as hurricanes and forest fires, by the introduction of foreign emerging animal diseases, and by potential acts of bioterrorism. These threats all affect animal health, public health and safety, and our state and national economies. In the aftermath of any emergency, veterinarians and veterinary technicians may be needed to assist local, state, and national response teams in meeting the needs of our animals and people. These professionals would be a part of our State Agriculture Response Team (SART), serving under Emergency Support Function (ESF) 17 and our State Emergency Response Team. Veterinary staff may serve in assessing veterinary response capabilities and provide for emergency animal treatment in the aftermath of a natural disaster or may serve in support of disease surveillance and control efforts in combating devastating diseases affecting Florida’s animals. Although this program is unable to provide salary or benefits to its volunteers, volunteers working in an official capacity would be covered under state liability and workers’ compensation programs. Florida has a very strong veterinary community and this program is intended to provide greater resources to build our animal emergency response capacity. Please consider joining the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in support of this program. Links to our brochure and a printable application are provided for your convenience. We hope that you will give serious consideration to volunteering for this program. Please print the application and after competition mail to: Joe Kight, ECO-ESF-17, Room 333, Mayo Building, Division of Animal Industry, 407 South Calhoun Street, Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0800. A Horse Blog – Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Announces New Livestock Indemnity ProgramWASHINGTON, July 7, 2009 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that eligible ranchers and livestock producers can begin applying for benefits under the provisions of the Livestock Indemnity Program in the 2008 Farm Bill on July 13. “This program will provide livestock producers with a vital safety net to help them overcome the damaging financial impact of natural disasters,” said Vilsack. The Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) provides assistance to producers for livestock deaths that result from disaster. Using funds from the Agricultural Disaster Relief Trust Fund established under section 902 of the Trade Act of 1974, the program is administered by the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA). LIP compensates livestock owners and contract growers for livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather, including losses due to hurricanes, floods, blizzards, disease, wildfires, extreme heat and extreme cold. Eligible losses must have occurred on or after Jan. 1, 2008, and before Oct. 1, 2011. The Argentine Polo Open takes place annually in Buenos Aires before 18,000 spectators and is the equivalent of the polo World Cup final. “The Rematch” is the first time a rematch has taken place outside Argentina and it is the only Fédération Internationale de Polo affiliated game in Europe which features eight of the eleven best players in the world with a 10-goal handicap. Among the eight players will be the greatest of all time, the “Maradona of polo“ as he is called by his compatriots, a player who has had a 10 handicap ever since the age of 19, Adolfo Cambiaso. Jean-Noel Bioul, Co-Director of Sponsoring at Rolex, said, “‘The Rematch’ will be the highlight of the European polo season and the only time that players with such a high handicap will compete against each other this season. We are very excited about the match and delighted to be the Presenting Sponsor of this prestigious event.” Patrick Guerrand-Hermès, President of the Fédération Internationale de Polo, said, “This is the greatest polo match to be played outside Argentina ever since the beginning of the modern era of polo, and having the support of such a globally respected world-class brand highlights how very prestigious ‘The Rematch’ will be.” This historic match will open the month-long Deauville polo season in August, which includes the traditional Silver Cup and Gold Cup. Many other great names from the world of polo will participate with their teams. -END- For further information: Pascal Renauldon R&B Presse Tel: +33 (344) 620 621 email: p.renauldon@rbpresse.com A Horse Blog – FEI COMPETITION REPORT dedicated to Jack LeGoffThis competition is dedicated to Jack LeGoff (1931-2009), the mastermind behind the FEI World CupTM Eventing, who passed away on 24 July. KALISPELL WINNER ON THE WAY TO POLAND Kalispell, Montana (USA), 28 July 2009 – Kelly Prather (USA) is on her way to the HSBC FEI World CupTM Eventing Final at Strzegom (POL, 21-23 August) after winning the North American leg at Kalispell, Montana. Riding Andrea Pfieffer’s mare Ballinakill Glory, Prather, 25, held her nerve in a nail-biting finish to score the only double clear round to hold her overnight Cross-Country lead. “I just wanted to have a good round,” said Prather. “She is a wonderful show jumper, so it was exciting to ride her and she deserved to jump clear. This was a good course for her and a great flow so you could lock into a rhythm. Coming into the last fence with my reins on the buckle was a bit nerve-racking though!” Second-placed Jennifer Wooten-Dafoe (USA) was equally pleased with her mare The Good Witch, owned by Daisy Tognazzini, clear but with 3 time penalties. “After this performance, I feel I can go to Europe and stand my ground. I’m really excited,” she said. The organisers of the event at Rebecca Farm, Rebecca and Jerome Broussard plus Cindy and Larry Lippon have generously created a fund to help US-based riders travel to Poland. COMPETITION STATISTICS 14 Dressage starters LEADER FROM FLAGFALL Prather led from the start with a dressage score of 45.6, adding 9.6 Cross-Country time penalties. Wooten-Dafoe, who had the fastest time (5.6 penalties) rose from 3rd to 2nd after Cross-Country. The Dressage runner-up, Tiana Coudray (USA) on Ringwood Magister, incurred 20 penalties when missing the left-hand turn to the B element of the Jurassic Park combination at fence 18 and slipped to eventual 8th. Sara Mittleider (USA) and the veteran El Primero rose from 6th after Dressage to 3rd after Cross-Country but rolled the very last Jumping rail to swap places with Californian Kristi Nunnink (USA) on R-Star. Riders were complimentary about the Cross-Country course designed by Captain Mark Phillips and built by Californian Bert Wood, which featured intricately carved obstacles, many reflecting the Montana culture, and posed all the right questions of riders while allowing horses to fully understand what was being asked of them. QUOTES Kelly Prather: “She went out of the start box and was stronger galloping than she’s ever been. She jumped very big and bold and I never felt a moment’s hesitation. It was one of the best Cross-Country rides ever.” Jennifer Wooten-Dafoe: “I haven’t been here (to Rebecca Farm) for a couple of years and the course was great. There were a few changes which I felt were good exercises for the Witch and me. Mark Phillips has designed a superb course and it was beautifully built, which made it that much more exciting to take a spin around it.” Kristi Ninnink: “It is so nice to have an event in the West (of the USA) that makes you feel prepared for other events. You can compete here and feel comfortable about what you will face at the big international competitions on the East coast.” Jim Wolf of the USEF: “Rebecca Farm is truly a world class event. The facilities, the footing and the outstanding organisation combine to create a premier world-class competition.” RESULTS 1 Kelly Prather/Ballinakill Glory (USA) 45.6 + 9.6 + 0 = 55.2 3 Kristi Nunnink/R-Star (USA) 58.8 + 12 + 0/5 = 75.8 5 Amy Tryon/Leyland (USA) 54 + 17.6 + 12/3 = 86.6 Full results on www.rebeccafarm.org 2009 HSBC FEI World CupTM Eventing standings (after 7 of 10 qualifiers) 1 Megan Jones (AUS) 203 Qualifying venues for the 2009 HSBC FEI World CupTM Eventing series: 1 Kihikihi (NZL), 10-12 April 2009 HSBC FEI World Cup TM Eventing final 2009 Strzegom POL 21-23 August 2009 The HSBC FEI World Cup TM Eventing qualifiers are a series of CIC 3*. The legislation, although heavily supported by Democrats, also received twenty-four percent of GOP votes. “This is an indication,” said Holland and Tobin, “of the bipartisan support horse legislation has enjoyed in past years. We are optimistic of continued bipartisan support for legislation to end the slaughter of American horses (HR 503 & S 727) and the banning of double decker cattle trucks for use in the transport of horses (HR 305).” The legislation restores what former Montana senator, Conrad Burns, removed from the 1971 Wild and Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act An important aspect of this bill is the prevention the commercial sale and slaughter of wild horses and the wholesale killing of healthy wild horses by the Bureau of Land Management and possibly others. “This is definite indication of the mainstream support for protecting our heritage and ending the unnecessary slaughter of our horses that all of these bills enjoy,” said Tobin. The message to western state legislators, supported by the deep pockets of agriculture associations, couldn’t be any clearer. American’s revere their heritage and our horses that work, race, perform and provide services and their outrage of American horses ending up on elite foreign diner’s dinner plates. Again, the EWA reiterates its support of the animal agriculture where the horse has always served as man’s loyal helpmate in bringing meat to market. We don’t eat our equine helpmates. We eat cattle, swine, poultry and other traditional food animals. http://www.equinewelfarealliance.org/ July 17, 2009 Contacts: John Holland 540.268.5693 Vicki Tobin 630.961.9292 A Horse Blog – South Eastern Distance Riders Association 2009-10 Tentative Ride CalendarSept 5-6 DISTANCE DRIVING CLINIC-RIDERS WELCOME Withlacoochee State Forest, ReNab Ranch, Lecanto, FL. Peters and Ravel Dominate for the US at CHIO Aachen By Joanie Morris July 13, 2009 In an unprecedented sweep, Steffen Peters and Akiko Yamazaki’s 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood Ravel swept all three classes in the CDIO Aachen (GER): the Grand Prix, the Grand Prix Special and the Grand Prix Freestyle – further validating their Rolex/FEI World CupTM Dressage Final victory in April. The sweep was a first for an American combination, and they did it in classic style. Their score in the finale, Sunday’s Grand Prix Freestyle, was 85.600%, more than a point clear of 2008 Olympic Gold Medalists Anky van Grunsven (NED) and IPS Salinero. They picked up 30,000 EURO for their efforts on Sunday, pushing their three-day prize money total to more than 45,000 EURO. With this win, Peters (who was born in Germany) more than realized a lifelong dream of finishing in the top three at Aachen. He achieved it, to standing ovations, with family, friends and fans in attendance to celebrate his tremendous accomplishment. The pair will return to their base in San Diego, California with the next major goal the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games next September in Lexington, Kentucky.
